A CLASSIC FROM THE “NEW YORK TIMES” BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “ONE SUMMER
”
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes–and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill … Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz’s overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But “A Walk in the Woods” is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, “A Walk in the Woods” has become a modern classic of travel literature.
“From the Trade Paperback edition.”

Amusing account of an adventure that it’s a wonder the 2 gentlemen survived.
I could never get “into” this book at all but plugged through it to the end because I rarely “quit” reading a book once I begin. It dragged.
One of my all time favorites!
I enjoy everything Bill Bryson has written. I have been to Gatlinberg several times and I laughed as he explained the area. A good read.
It has it all…without actually doing the Appalachian Trail hike!! I was sad it ended! My husband was constantly asking me “what’s so funny” – the book “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson. Now my husband is reading it and I don’t have to ask what is so funny. Good, clean, fun!
ONE OF BRYSON’S BEST.
I read it quite a while ago; picked it because I like to hike. My favorite memory os the description of a moose. A trip along the Appy (Appalachian Trail) without getting tired, hungry or dirty.
As Lincoln once said about a book on the occult, it think, when he was forced to give a blurb. For people who like this sort of books, this is the book they will like. If you like this one try A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush.
Bill’s adventures hiking the Appalachian trail! Amusing adventures and misadventures.
Bill Bryson is an entertaining writer. He does not disappoint us in this story of his effort to walk the Appalachian Trail.
Loved it
This book is hysterical! Gives a good idea of what the Appalachian Trail is like and is a breeze to whiz through. One of those books you can’t put down because it’s so funny! Highly recommend!!
One of the books I return to when I need cheering up. Bill Bryson is the Shakespeare of non-fiction, and this book never fails to enthrall me.
Love Bill Bryson’s sense of humor.
A wonderful tale of trek through the woods.
My most favorite of Bryson’s books. Laugh-out-loud!
I live near the AT. Bryson is very critical of it and I think he has no idea how that trail works.
While I never plan to hike the Appalachian Trail, it’s great fun to read Bryson’s account of his time there and experience it vicariously.
He’s a terrific writer.
This was a fun read. I read this book about ten years ago, and I’m still thinking about it, now and then. It’s a great reminder to get up off of the couch and put your feet on the trail. If you put one foot in front of the other, it’s amazing how far your feet can take you!
Absolutely hilarious while at the same time sharing the wonders of the Appalachian Trail!
