A CLASSIC FROM THE “NEW YORK TIMES” BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “ONE SUMMER
”
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes–and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill … Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz’s overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But “A Walk in the Woods” is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, “A Walk in the Woods” has become a modern classic of travel literature.
“From the Trade Paperback edition.”

absolutely hilarious – too bad the movie didn’t do so well…
In A Walk in the Woods Bill Bryson connects us with our humanity, and he does it with a smile. Well done!
Laugh out loud funny!
My favorite of Bryson’s
I’ve read several books written by Bill Bryson and they are always enjoyable. This one is no exception. And I’ve read at least a dozen books about long distance hiking (kind of addicted to this subject) and find them interesting because of the struggles and challenges involved. But, a “Walk in the Woods” stands out from the other “hiking” …
I liked Bill Bryson’s other books better, Especially, Notes from a Small Island, but having walked a good bit of the Appalachian Trailing VA it was enjoyable
A great book but Bill Bryson’s only good book.
A great travel log and fun to read. This book does a wonderful job of capturing Bryson’s experience and emotions while on the Appalachian Trail.
Loving the outdoors, Bryson had me laughing until I was almost sick. Great tale of the Long Trail.
I enjoyed how he incorporated his interactions with others while sharing the landscapes along his way along the Appalachian Trail. He added informative information about subjects which mattered most to him.
How can you go wrong with Bill Bryson
First Bryson book I read – sent me off on a mission to read ALL of his books !!!
So entertaining AND he’s a masterful writer/storyteller. Try it – you’ll be so glad you did. He is a treasure.
I gave this book as a Christmas preset to just about everyone in my family. I learned a lot about preparing to hike the Appalachian Trail, by a man who had never hiked in his life. Setting off with a friend who had donuts hanging from a string off his back pack ( also an inexperienced hiker), the two start out on the whimsical notion that …
Fun and funny
Appalachia trail adventure. The book was better than the movie. Bill Bryson can tell a good tale with so much humor. I learned about a part of the country I know nothing about. The characters had great depth.
This book weaves information about the Appalachian Trail with the adventures of the author and his friend. Mr. Bryson is a very entertaining writer.
Bill Benson’s tale of life on the Appalachian Trail was hilarious. The character interaction was fantastic.
One of my all-time favorite books especially when you hit at time of change
Only Bryson, solely on the strength of his wonderful and witty use of language, could entice me to follow him as he hikes the entire length of the Appalachian Trail. I have the feeling reading the book was more enjoyable than the actual hike would have been. Bryson himself admits he was tired (and perhaps bored) of the whole thing by the time …
I loved the first half of this book. The second part was fine—but the first had me laughing out loud.
