A CLASSIC FROM THE “NEW YORK TIMES” BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “ONE SUMMER
”
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes–and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill … Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz’s overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But “A Walk in the Woods” is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, “A Walk in the Woods” has become a modern classic of travel literature.
“From the Trade Paperback edition.”

Also an Iowan, I enjoy anything Bryson writes, especially about his home state.
I always thought a trek on the Appalachian Trail would be a great adventure, but I’m too late, and way too old to participate. He did it for me! Thanks, Bill.
Great book, it was perfect for someone like me who loves to hike but doesn’t take it too seriously

I’ve done the Trail And Bryson’s writing is spot on. And it is one of the funniest books it has been my pleasure to read. He is a superb writer.
HILARIOUS! And real. You’ll learn a lot about the mountains while laughing your ass off. You will never look at Little Debbie’s the same way.
LOVED IT! Actually laughed out loud while reading parts. Bill created such vivid images of his journey with such an unlikely companion. Might have left the companion at the first rest stop?! Fun adventure! I liked the story so much I gave 3 others the book for gifts!
This was my very favorite of Bill Bryson’s books that I’ve read.
A very entertaining tale of the Appalachian Trail. Much funnier than the movie.
I had long heard of Bill Bryson, but since I wasn’t all that interested in travel writing, I had never read any of his work. Finally, out of fiction to read, I ambled on in… and was utterly charmed. Walk is a story about the Appalachian Trail, which Bryson and a friend attempted to walk. It’s full of history and legend about the Trail and those …
