Bill Bryson decides to hike the Appalachian Trail after living abroad for a few years. He thinks it will help him get in form, reconnect with his fatherland, and learn how to survive in nature. He jokes that it will make him feel manfully a well. Bryson knows that global warming might soon destroy this natural wonderland, so he wants to see it before it ’ sulfur gone. Bill Bryson talks to a few people who ’ ve hiked the appalachian Trail and realizes that he ’ s in over his promontory. He thinks about all the dangers he might face, including rattlesnakes, coyotes, wolves, drunkard hillbillies with guns, skunks with rabies and owl. He imagines himself meeting his demise surrounded by wolves or open fire ants. then he starts thinking about murderers—at least nine hikers have been murdered since 1974. Bryson wants to hike the Appalachian Trail, but he doesn ’ thyroxine want to get caught in bad weather. so, alternatively of hiking the whole drag at once ( which would take him five months ), he decides to start his gamble in March and finish by October then that he can avoid bad upwind. Bryson imagines that he could have been eaten by a hold if he had gone on the appalachian Trail. He thinks about everything that could go faulty, such as forgetting to bring candy or using a perfumed gel in his hair.
