A CLASSIC FROM THE “NEW YORK TIMES” BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “ONE SUMMER
”
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes–and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill … Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz’s overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But “A Walk in the Woods” is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, “A Walk in the Woods” has become a modern classic of travel literature.
“From the Trade Paperback edition.”

Loved it!
Good fun about the out doors.
I didn’t even know the Appalachian Trail still existed before I read this book. That the two guys made it as far as they did, and came back for more is impressive. Made me want to do a bit of a hike myself.
A great read about a once in a lifetime adventure full of personal challenges interwoven with the beauty of the Appalachian Trail.
One of my all time favorites!
I’m a big Bill Bryson fan anyway and this did not disappoint.
Delightful,!
Bryson’s tale of hiking the Appalachian Trail with his unfit companion was destined to become a classic from day one.
Two guys taking on a mammoth challenge, told with Bryson’s usual wit and wry observations.
Like Blue Highways, reading this book will make you yearn for a journey.
I absolutely love this book. I have purchased this book and given it to friends. It is one of my 100 favorite books. Bill Bryson knows how to relate the whimsical side of life. You will want to hike the trail after you read this book.
Bill Bryson I has written several books about his travels around the world. After living abroad for 20 years he returned to America to write about the Appalachian Trail . Another book by Bill Bryson I
The Lost Continent written in the form of a travelogue
In small town America. Funny and well written.
Couldn’t put the book down.
This is an incredibly enjoyable and mostly humorous book on hiking the Appalachian Trail. Bryson reunites with a character from his past, Stephen Katz. (In the 1970’s, the two young men hiked around Europe and the result was the book Neither Here Nor There.) Bryson is a travel writer extraordinaire and lets the reader in on the ups, downs, pains, and joys of hiking 2000 miles in the wilderness.
Hilarious portrayal of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Great book.
Bill Bryson always writes entertaining books. A lot of fun.
