From a USA Today Best Selling AuthorThe story is not your typical murder mystery. The sleuth is not a detective, private eye, or lawyer. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog.Jacob Martin is trying to make the best of a divorce and mid-life crisis when he gets a call at two o’clock Sunday morning from his mother. His sister has been arrested for the murder of her fourth husband, and his … her fourth husband, and his father is near death. Thus begins an adventure that takes Jake and his golden retriever from their Colorado retreat to a backwater town in the Missouri Ozarks where they search for cold-blooded killers, a cache of gold coins buried by Jesse James, and the love of a beautiful nurse.

This was such a great story
convoluted
Good read. Great to read without concerns regarding (foul) language. Unexpected turns in plot.
Sorry, if a book doesnt get my attention in the 1st chapter I stop.
Every time I thought I had the mystery solved another piece of the puzzle came out. Fun quick book.
Interesting and flawed characters. Fun dog part of story
Good characters, but not quality mystery. For example, the main character keeps on gathering bits of evidence, believing that when he reveals them to the authorities they will prove his innocence, never considering that such actions generally invalidate the evidence in addition to exposing him to obstruction charges. The plot rambles and is not …
I don’t need to know every time the dog had to go out side for his business
A real who done it with lots of clues to have you assuming in every direction. Read every page and don’t read … well you know what I mean ’cause it’s not there!
Well written with great characters including a dog. The audio was good also. It’s not a cozy mystery and it’ not a hard core mystery. It is in the middle which I like. The two extremes can be a bit much. This was an excellent change. I gave it a 5 star because I didn’t want to put it down to go to bed and stayed up much later than I planned.
I’ve read the first two of Richard Houston’s books and plan on reading the rest. Very enjoyable!
I enjoyed this read though sometimes I found the sister’s behavior selfish (and wondered about her gratitude for her brother’s help). I am looking forward to reading the next book, A Book to Die For, in due time.
good mystery with many possibilities—–busy but keeps interest peaked
I love Jake and his dog, Fred. Great reading and Jake’s humor is “To Die For.”
This is one book of a series – The whole series is very enjoyable to read. Looking forward to the next one.
A book any true dog lover would laugh with, and a good story as well.
These books are becoming some of my favorites.
Light reading. Fun
Great way to pass time at the airport.
The author over used breakfast scenes and beer drinking scenes throughout his writing. The main character and his dog had a great relationship that was depicted well by the author.
