From a USA Today Best Selling AuthorThe story is not your typical murder mystery. The sleuth is not a detective, private eye, or lawyer. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog.Jacob Martin is trying to make the best of a divorce and mid-life crisis when he gets a call at two o’clock Sunday morning from his mother. His sister has been arrested for the murder of her fourth husband, and his … her fourth husband, and his father is near death. Thus begins an adventure that takes Jake and his golden retriever from their Colorado retreat to a backwater town in the Missouri Ozarks where they search for cold-blooded killers, a cache of gold coins buried by Jesse James, and the love of a beautiful nurse.

I loved this book mainly because of the picture of the golden retriever on the cover. Jake Martin is ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog, a golden retriever named Fred. He’s a divorced handyman. Jack gets a call at two o’clock Sunday morning from his mother. His sister, Megan has been arrested for the murder of her fourth husband, Mike and …
This murder mystery will definitely hold your attention while you follow Jake playing detective. While he starts out trying to find out who killed his sister’s fourth husband he learns it has something to do with stolen gold coins. This type of investigation is way out of Jake’s league but he wants to prove his sister is innocent of murdering her …
Fun read…..the pup, Fred, is a great character…!
Still reading so far very good
This is a mystery although it includes real life possibilities, shows how not thinking people can people and how selfish. If all families are like this we are in big trouble world but lots to laugh at and love the dog.
I’ve read a several in the series by this author and look forward to more. The main character IS just a regular guy trying to make ends meet, and he has a great dog to rely on! Original plots and storyline and just right for a curl up and read afternoon.
Didn’t hold interest
I liked this book. I read book 2 first and then this book 1 but I liked them both and it really didn’t make a difference in the order for me.
Enjoy this series.
I had a hard time getting into the book. Probably an off day for me.
Excellent. Couldn’t put it down
Thoroughly enjoyed this one – main character was wonderful and his dog was a star. If you have a pet, you’ll love this one!
This book is a good read. The characters are formed with great interest.
The ending was unpredictable.
Who doesn’t like a book with a dog in it? Thank you again Mr. Houston.
I thought this book was okay. I normally like these sort of common people turned detective books, but this one did not work as well for me. I did not particularly like any of the characters, including the main characters. Although. I did not dislike them–they were just there. Usually a book with a dog as a main character gives the dog some real …
This is a well written book with a clever story. I’m addicted!
Good story except for all the drinking….and a sad ending.
Enjoyed this book! Richard Houston’s writing made me laugh; I am sure I will read more of his work. Loved Fred, but what is not to like about a sweet golden. A mystery, little romance, typical teenagers, difficult relatives and a view to die for.
This was an effortless read. Sometimes the prose was unclear. Lots of build up to a rushed ending.
