Murder is never far from this sexy couple . . . even during the holidays!Their honeymoon abruptly ended by the untimely death of Alcott Howard, Clive and Henrietta return to Highbury, where Clive discovers all is not as it should be. Increasingly convinced that his father’s death was not an accident, Clive launches his own investigation, despite his mother’s belief that he has become “mentally … “mentally disturbed” with grief. Henrietta eventually joins forces with Clive on their first real case, which becomes darker—and deadlier—than they imagined as they get closer to the truth behind Alcott’s troubled affairs.
Meanwhile, Henrietta’s sister, Elsie, begins, at Henrietta’s orchestration, to take classes at a women’s college—an attempt to evade her troubles and prevent any further romantic temptations. When she meets a bookish German custodian at the school, however, he challenges her to think for herself . . . even as she discovers some shocking secrets about his past life.

In Michelle Cox’s fourth book in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series, the sleuthing couple return to the Howard’s stately home on Chicago’s north shore to pick up the pieces of the family and business following the senior Howard’s mysterious death. Meanwhile, Henrietta’s sister Elsie must define her own life while shoring up the Von Harmon family still struggling despite their improved circumstances. Murder, mystery, delicious romance, adventurous romp, and lush writing continue the pleasures of the first three books in the series, with an added depth and poignancy as the series’ beloved characters struggle to come to terms with the real meaning of love, loyalty and self-determination.
“A Veil Removed” written by Michelle Cox is the 4th book in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard Series. This is the first book in this series and by this author that I have read and I definitely will be reading the rest of the books in this series. This book has a great storyline that takes place in the 1930’s Chicago. Even though this was book #4 in the series I really enjoyed it. I was drawn in from the first page and didn’t want to put it down. The characters are well developed and likeable. “A Veil Removed” is very well written it is a fun and entertaining read with an ending you wouldn’t expect. If you like romance, love, suspense and danger this is the book for you. I really am looking forward to reading more from author Michelle Cox. Thank you Michelle for my Advanced Reading Copy. I highly recommend this book to all Historical Fiction Readers.
I been recently introduced to Michelle Cox’s books when I received an ARC of her most recent book “A Veil Removed.” This book is the fourth in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series. Now that I’ve read this one, I would recommend reading them in order. Starting at book 4 did not affect my enjoyment of this book which takes place in 1930’s Chicago. Henrietta and Clive are forced home early from their honeymoon after the sudden death of his father. His death was ruled an accident- but was it? So sets the stage for a mystery that Clive and Henrietta must solve. The story is well-written with strong characters. I look forward to reading more of Henrietta and Inspector Howard’s adventures!
I received this book as an ARC. It was my first read in the serious and I’m sure I will read the others. Henrietta and Clive must cut their honeymoon short when Clive’s father has an “accident” on the train platform causing his death. Inspector Clive senses something is off about the death and launches his own investigation with the help of his beautiful wife. Meanwhile He Henrietta’s sister Elsie is having her own inner battles recovering from a relationship gone wrong she heads to college despite the intentions of her grandfather and aunt who are determined to “arrange” her a good marriage. Read to find out if Clive solves his father’s murder and see how Elsie adapts to college life
I am thankful to have had the opportunity to get an advanced reading copy of this book : ) It is well-paced, and the plot alternates between Henrietta, Clive, and Elsie. Elsie gets a big part of this book as she struggles with how to move forward after the “events” of the previous book, how to maintain the household and Ma without Henrietta, and new emotions about the options for her future.
We have the introduction of some new characters, and we continue to see Clive and Henrietta grow in their marriage. They seem to have gotten past some of the struggles of the last book and seem to have matured in their relationship. Henrietta is finding her place as Mrs. Clive Howard, society lady, and Clive grows to love her independent spirit and optimism more every day.
I love the historical details, from the characters’ clothes to the architecture, to the society and culture.
A most enjoyable read, with a wrap-up to some of the loose ends from the last book, and a new cliffhanger ending. It seems there is more to tell…
I really enjoy this series and loved this latest installment. The characters are both easily relatable and likable. The storyline and plot of the novel is fun, entertaining, and very easy to follow. It’s a great book to lose yourself in on a rainy Sunday morning. I look forward to reading. more from this author. I highly recommend if you like a good lighthearted mystery.
Absolutely loved this book! Couldn’t put it down! If you like the book Pride and Prejudice, you’ll absolutely love this book! Great characters , great story, very unexpected ending! Highly recommend this book! Michelle Cox is a phenomenal author! Thank you Michellefor such a great read! Looking forward to more!
An endearing, delightful story! Michelle Cox tells an engaging tale of a pair of fun and witty sleuths. There is the element of romance between the couple to keep you entertained as well. You are pulled alongside them into a web of twists and surprises, holding onto every clue, as the couple tries to solve a mystery. You will even feel like part of the busy community in the 1930s Chicago, as the descriptions are detailed and authentic.
This is my first novel by Michelle Cox. I enjoyed reading, “A Veil Removed” as I learned more interesting facts about the busy city of Chicago. Being a frequent visitor there myself, it made for a fun read when places were mentioned that I actually have visited. This is book four of Michelle’s “Henrietta and Inspector Howard” series. It did read well as a stand-alone, but to read the start of the series would be fun, to get to know the beginnings of Clive and Henrietta’s relationship. If you enjoy an engaging mystery with a little romance; this story and series should be on you TBR list for your next weekend getaway!
~This book was given to me through a giveaway by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.~
1930’s Chicago
Storyline was good, but this is part of a series and there were continual references to prior events and characters from the previous books.
This really “peels back the onion” so to speak, and lets you imagine what life was like for people, with out ALL of the distractions we have today.
Just did not connect
It was an interesting story set during the Russian Revolution. Good job creating a sense of the terror of being a wealthy woman in the midst of the rise of the proletariat who wants to become a nurse against her Establishment parents. Healthy love story, too. A good read, but not one that will have you thinking about it for weeks after.
The language is so stilted in this book that it made for a difficult read. Even with that proviso, if the author had perhaps illuminated more of the characters’ inner life, I could have forgive that; however, this is not the case. You never feel as if you are “there”. Stilted. That’s all I can say.
COULD NOT GET IN TO THIS BOOK
Not my genre
Could not get into it
Good story which does not need sex scenes, too many and slows down resolution of story. I’m disappointed.
Couldn’t get into it. Sounds like a good series, maybe i’l have to try another of the books.
I didn’t find any of the characters at all believable. They all seemed to be stereotypes. The third star is for the plot. It moves quickly and is engaging.
