There is a treasure high in the Colorado Rockies waiting for someone to find it. Jake Martin couldn’t care less. Since the death of his wife, all Jake wants is to be left alone in his mountain cabin where he and his dog, Fred, can get on with life. But when it becomes known that the location of the treasure is encrypted in a message left by a 19th century miner, people begin to die, and Jake’s … good friend and neighbor becomes the number one suspect.
The old miner used a copy of Tom Sawyer as a key to his coded message, and the real murderer wants that edition so bad, he’s willing to kill for it. Can the amateur sleuths decode the message and stop the murderer, or have Jake and Fred finally met their match?

well written if you don’t mind ageist remarks about ‘old women’ of 62
Love this author. He always spins a tale that’s worth following.
Fun read.
Love the series and the characters.
much better than your ordinary cozy mystery.
Not my favorite. At times I was forcing myself to continue.
These books are “to die for”. Love them
always love a story that contains animals that are displayed as
characters. You’ll love Fred in this one.
I enjoyed the story altho Bonnie was frustrating with all her bad habits controlling her. Fred was charming and i enjoyed the tours of the countryside since I’ve lived there and love it.
I enjoyed this book. The story was fun, characters were easy to relate to.
love the whole “to Die For” series by this author. Fun, interesting story lines and I always enjoy a mystery with a pup in it!
Full of twists and turns – keeps you guessing until the end.
Great read.
It was just OK.
This is the 2nd book in the series I have read. It is very entertaining and witty. Love the characters.
Needed more editing.
Good read, have read them all.
This was the first book of the series that I have read, and that may be a mistake. I am not real vested in the characters and while a nice read, I may not continue the series. If I started with the first book, maybe. Most series have the occasional book that is not quite up to par with the rest of the series and that is easily forgiven. But if I happen to pick up that book it makes it less likely I’ll read the rest of the series.
A story about a man and his dog and his 78 year old neighbor. Kinda boring.
I enjoy reading about a wide range of characters but it’s nice to see some characters who aren’t always 20- somethings and beautiful. I would enjoy meeting the main characters in this story and love dog stories.
