There is a treasure high in the Colorado Rockies waiting for someone to find it. Jake Martin couldn’t care less. Since the death of his wife, all Jake wants is to be left alone in his mountain cabin where he and his dog, Fred, can get on with life. But when it becomes known that the location of the treasure is encrypted in a message left by a 19th century miner, people begin to die, and Jake’s … good friend and neighbor becomes the number one suspect.
The old miner used a copy of Tom Sawyer as a key to his coded message, and the real murderer wants that edition so bad, he’s willing to kill for it. Can the amateur sleuths decode the message and stop the murderer, or have Jake and Fred finally met their match?

Jake lives in the mountains of Colorado with his Golden Retriever, Fred. He has a neighbor, Bonnie. A local legend says that there is a code in a rare copy of Tom Sawyer which leads to a treasure. People start coming up dead and Bonnie is looking like the prime suspect. Jake and Fred work on solving the murders to clear Bonnie and almost becomes a victim himself. There is some mild profanity.
I read the previous book and had to buy this book so I could keep reading about Jake, Fred and Bonnie. This book was entertaining and a fast read just like the others in the series. This is becoming one of my most favorite authors and series to read.
I love all the “to die for” books They are funny exciting and have entertaining endings
I really enjoy Dog books and have read many of Mr Houston’s “To Die For” books. He makes his Dog almost real and the Dog helps him find the treasures!!!
I really enjoyed this book and both leading character! Of course, I love Fred!!!!
okay but kept putting down, when interesting was a good read but mostly dragged out.
Love how the retriever adds to the story.
Nice portrayal of Colorado.
I’d read anything this great author wrote!
Enjoy his work.
Really good book, great characters and intriguing twists, pick this one up today.
Love Fred
It was ok but predictable. I did finish it but found myself checking to see how many pages were left. There was a lot of build up but the ending was so quick I felt robbed. It seemed like the author was trying to copy the Janet Evonavich Stephanie Plum Series
The twists and turns in this cozy mystery still has my head spinning.
These mysteries are light, enjoyable reading. I love the Golden Retriever involvement. The main characters are believable and enjoyable. I am trying to read the whole series.
Love his books,
Richard Houston get’s you engaged with the story from page 1. Great story
Another fun Jake and Fred yarn. The places in Denver are familiar and you always wonder if Jake is going to have to pay up this time. A fun clean read.
Nice easy read with some humor and a decent plot.
I’m not really sure if I read these books because I like the mystery or Fred the best. I think it’s because I adore Fred. This is only the second one of the “To Die For” books I’ve read but I will be moving on to the rest. I have to admit that this one didn’t keep quite as engrossed as “A Book to Die for” but I still enjoyed it. I like the main character Jake, a reluctant hero and his Jack Daniels drinking, smoking, 69-year old neighbor Bonnie is a hoot. I enjoy Mr. Houston’s writing style without all the gory details, over-the-top sex and swearing. HIs books are well written, edited & proofread which I find more & more appreciated in digital books.
