4 1/2*STARS * IN DISGUISE AS A SPY
Miss Phoebus Duvall and her aunt are living in their home with a leaky roof and the house in need of repair. Her father disappeared in France three years ago and they have no income. England is still at war with France. Robert Goodrich is on a mission to unearth a traitor transporting escaped French prisoners. Phoebe is his link to solving the problem. She needs a husband for her inheritance.
Will it be Robert who wears many disguises or a blackmailer? Only finding information about her father will influence her decision. Robert is very good at seduction, no matter what disguise he wears. My favorite is dressed up as a dandy.
Utterly scrumptious!! There is never a doubt when I begin reading a book by Elizabeth Keysian that I will laugh, smile, sigh and fall in love with the wonderful characters she creates.
Miss Phoebe Duvall was desperate to find a position to help with her and her aunt’s financial woes. With her father’s disappearance, she would have to wait seven years to access his funds, when he could be officially declared dead. What was even worse is that she just found out she would not receive any funds unless she married in three months! What? Why was she just finding this out now? Fortuitous for her, she had answered an add to act as a hostess for Mr Charles Addyman at Donhead Castle, to raise funds for charity and they would live on the premises. She could find a husband!
Robert Goodrich-Bligh, Master of disguise (well, that is stretching it a bit!) and heir to the confiscated earldom of Marchmont, literally bumped into Phoebe with an ink pot that ruined her dress. He was outfitted as an outrageous fop! Robert was on a mission and in the end, it would involve Phoebe since she would be working with Addyman at Donhead Castle.. His home. Or would be again…
Full of humor, traitors, danger, a sizzling attraction, suspense and two people trying to make their way to a happy ever after, although they don’t realize it until it is almost too late! Love it!! 🙂
I loved this story, there were times when I laughed out loud, felt sad and all within the same paragraph. The characters were so fun but also concerned. Such as Miss Phoebe Duvall, her father had been missing for three years and she was so afraid he was dead. Blacklands was falling down around her and soon she and her aunt would have nowhere to live.
Mr. Robert Goodrich-Bligh should have been the fourth Earl of Marchmont, because of his father it had been confiscated. Robert had a sister but she had to stay in Italy, she was too ill to travel. He really was a barely adequate spy. He had two disguises, one as a macaroni (dandy) and the other as a country parson. Phoebe thought he looked like a Daffodil. He had been set to find a traitor who now rented his old home. But he had to get proof. It interesting how Phoebe and Robert reacted with each other. The writing was so very good, it moves flawlessly. There is a little sex towards the end, but all is done with taste. I very highly recommend this fun and interesting,
A Treacherous Engagement by Elizabeth Keysian is book Two in the Marry in Haste Series. This is the story of Robert Goodrich-Bligh and Phoebe Duvall. I have read the previous book but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Phoebe has found out that her father is missing and that she will need to marry to keep her inheritance to help her reaming family. Phoebe is a strong independent women and knows what she needs to do . This leads her to take a job to helping Charles Addyman. This in turns leads her into Robert’s path. Robert has his own family issues and somewhat similar issues to Phoebe. Robert is also working to prove that Addyman is a traitor which has put him in some questionable positions that have made Phoebe unsure of him. This adds to the story when Phoebe has to make a decision about her future.
I so enjoy Ms. Keysian’s writing and always look forward to her books.
A Treacherous Engagement by Elizabeth Keysian is the second book in her Marry in Haste series. I adored this story and it made me laugh a lot! I’m sure I had a ridiculous Cheshire Cat grin on my face throughout most of the book! The writing was fabulous and the characters were charming and very interesting! Robert has to be like, the absolute worst undercover ever. I’m smiling just thinking of how awkward yet how utterly confident of his ability to disguise himself he was. Phoebe was a very likeable heroine but I’ll be honest the hero in this story just owns it and shines. I don’t really want to give any spoilers so I’ll end my review with a big 5 stars. If you love humour with your romance this is the book for you! A very enjoyable read.
A Treacherous Engagement is an outstanding historical romance by Elizabeth Keysian. Ms. Keysian has populated this well-written book with a stellar cast of characters. The characters are my favorite part of this story. Phoebe is in need of employment and a husband. Robert is working undercover, trying to find proof that Phoebe’s employer is aiding the French. Phoebe and Robert’s story is packed with humor, drama, spice, action and suspense. I loved this book from cover to cover and can’t wait for my next book by Elizabeth Keysian. A Treacherous Engagement is book 2 of the Marry in Haste Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from a third party. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
