I really enjoyed the other books in this series, and this one was excellent from an intrigue standpoint, but the romance left a little to be desired. I feel like the author can get away with that in this case, since the line is meant to focus on the intrigue, but I felt like it was missed opportunities between Laney and Owen. The chemistry was there, but the effort was lacking.
The action in this book was nonstop from start to finish. So much so, that by the final scene, I worried it might never end. It was a bit much, but the reveal at the end was worth the extensive shootout you had to get through to get there.
I’ve read these books out of order with no problem, so you don’t have to read them in order for them to make sense, which is nice when it comes to Harlequins. I often end up reading the fourth or fifth book in the series and then go back and read the rest. If you love small-town suspense, sheriffs, deputies, and ranches, you’ll love the Longview Ridge Ranch series.
This story has a lot going on, suspense, mystery, love. I was drawn in to the story line to find out what is going on and who killed Laney’s sister and I did not want to put it down till It was finished! I highly recommend this book!!!!!
Good combination of suspense and romance. The action began immediately as Owen arrived home to find an intruder in his home and his daughter missing. I could feel his fear for his daughter and his relief when he found her with his ranch manager, Laney. The relief doesn’t last long as the intruder begins shooting, and things get very tense before help arrives. In the aftermath, Owen has a lot of questions for Laney, who turns out to be much more than a ranch manager.
Laney Martin is a private investigator who is looking for the truth behind her half-sister’s murder. She is convinced that Emerson Keaton had an affair with Hadley and then killed her to cover it up. Laney took the job as Owen’s ranch manager to get closer to Emerson, who is Owen’s brother-in-law.
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Laney and Owen. It had a rough start, with Laney’s concealment of who she was and why she was there, and her suspicion that Owen was involved in covering up Emerson’s crime. Owen was reluctant to trust Laney because of those reasons. Complicating matters was the attraction that flared between them. I liked seeing the trust between them build as they worked together to find the truth. One of the things that brought them together was the protectiveness that both felt toward Owen’s daughter Addie. There were some sweet scenes with the three of them. However, it took the thought of losing Laney for Owen to realize his feelings for her. I did like their big moment at the end.
The suspense of the story was intense all the way through the book. Laney and Owen’s search for the truth behind Hadley’s murder and the attacks on them were complicated by the appearance of a man who had gone to jail because of his assaults on Laney. There were several twists and turns as the investigation into Hadley’s death progressed and the attacks on Owen and Laney intensified. There were several suspects in those attacks, and all of them had ample opportunity and motive. The final confrontation was a nail-biter with all three suspects present and bullets flying. I was glad to see that my instincts were right about the identity of the murderer.
The murder of the elder Sheriff Slater was briefly mentioned, though no further information was revealed about who was responsible. I hope the next book includes some progress there.
A Threat To His Family is book 2 of the Longview Ridge Ranch series. Once again Delores Fossen writes an explosive story about another member of the Slater family. Deputy Owen Slater is terrified when he can’t find his eighteen-month-old Naomi when he discovers an intruder inside his house. To his relief, his gun-toting ranch manager, Laney Martin, is keeping his daughter safe. He soon discovers she is more than she seems. Laney Martin, a professional investigator, has gone into hiding while working on a sensitive case that hits too close to home. Owen agrees to help Laney to find the truth; together they rely on every weapon in their arsenal—and sharing secrets they buried long ago.
Delores Fossen is a masterful storyteller of romantic suspense stories involving tight family ties with a fast-paced plot that never slows down. She adds just enough ingredients of flying bullets, suspects, occasional car chases, and deep-rooted attractions between her heroes and heroines in all her Harlequin Intrigues Books, and A Threat To His Family is one of them.
Bullets are flying, suspects keep popping up and romance is in the air in Delores Fossen’s latest romantic suspense book.
Laney Martin is determined to keep eighteen-month-old Naomi Slater, daughter of widower ranch owner and deputy sheriff Owen Slater safe. Laney had been in the kitchen with Naomi when the power went off. At the sound of a man entering the house through the front door Laney picked up Naomi and hid in the pantry. When she heard the man, who she knew wasn’t Owen, going up the steps to the second floor she ran out the backdoor towards the barn. She had just gotten into the barn and started hiding in the back corner next to some hay bales when a man entered the barn. Her fear increased and then turned to relief when Owen announced he was there. Laney had no idea what was going on, but she knew it was nothing good. Nope! Not good at all! Things went from bad to worse when shots were fired. Laney knew Owen would have lots of questions to ask her. Time to fess up. She hoped Owen wouldn’t be too upset with her since she was attracted to him and loved spending time with Naomi.
After the shootout ended Owen did, indeed, have lots of questions for his gun-toting ranch manager Laney. Or as he came to discover Elaine Pierce. How dare she put his daughter in danger. Her answers better be good!
A Threat to His Family by Delores Fossen is the second book in her Longview Ridge Ranch series. I have come to expect lots of action and suspense in this author’s romantic suspense books and this story most definitely does not disappoint. The plot is full of mystery and plenty of suspects to investigate. I had to keep turning the pages to see if my guesses were correct. Delores Fossen kept me guessing until the end. The Slater brothers once again came together to keep all in the family safe. I really like the tight family ties of these brothers. I really enjoyed Owen getting teased by brothers Jack and Eli. Typical brothers!
Don’t start reading this book too late in the day or you will be losing sleep because I bet you won’t be able to put it down until the very end.
