An exciting adventure with heartfelt sadness. Alaric seeks the antidote to the poison that infected his wife before it threatens to take her life. Love the characters he meets along the way. An elf, a dwarf, a blacksmith, a young milkmaid, each helping in the only way they can against an evil Soul Shade. My heart went out to Alaric and his many sacrifices for the love of his wife. Many surprises and twists to the story. Highly recommend reading this epic high fantasy tale.
What a gem of a story. It definitely ticks all my boxes. I was pulled into JA Andrews’ awesome world right from the first page by the fabulous characters and wonderful writing. Skillful plotting, entrancing situations and compelling dialogue kept me turning pages until I finished two days after starting. Utter Genius!
Highly recommended.
Stop what you’re doing and dive into this magnificent piece!! JA Andrews is going to rock your socks off! From her beautiful voice, her cast of lovable characters, phenomenal world building, the magic . . . . and the secrets!!!!!!!!!!!!! JA was constantly unraveling layers upon layers of secrets–jaw-dropping, heart-stopping, can’t-stop-reading secrets!! The plot kept thickening as I found myself completely enthralled with this world, unable to come up for air! It was such a masterfully told fantasy worthy of all the greats like Brandon Sanderson, Richard Knaak, Patrick Rothfuss, Michael J. Sullivan and more!!
And to top it all off she included beautiful character sketches and a magnificent short story called The Black Horn. And let me tell you . . . The Black Horn was SUCH an amazing short! The characters, the world building . . . bahhh!! It grips you from the first page, takes you on a wild ride, and then drops you, leaving you begging for more! I cannot even describe how excited I am to see what happens!!!
It’s authors like JA Andrews that are CRUSHING the indie stigma!!!!
JA Andrews has my heart with her covers alone, but I absolutely love to sink into her stories! Her noblebright fantasy roots always steal my heart, and this first book was no exception. Tension kept me reading but not so stressed I couldn’t focus, and I really jived with her writing style. 5 stars, of course!
One of my first Dragon stories and J.A. Andrews has me hooked! I really enjoy her world building and imagination. Enjoyed the characters personalities, conversational volleys and snappy comebacks.
This is a unique story with characters that a full and real. You are drawn into the need for the quest and the stakes right away and it never stops.
A Threat of Shadows is a fantastic epic fantasy that will take familiar tropes and gently turn them on their head as JA Andrews weaves a tale of loss, redemption, and sacrifice that will stick with you long after you reach the last page. Highly recommended.
A Threat of Shadows by J.A. Andrews is the first book of The Keeper Chronicles. We follow Alaric on his journey to find a cure for his dying wife.
I just love J.A.’s writing style. She lured me in with the first sentence and kept my attention throughout the book. I fell in love with the characters. They were believable to the point of making sure I had tissues on hand. This is a wonderful love story? Maybe…but definitely a story of determination and love so strong that you have to ask yourself, “How far would I go for a loved one?” Truly an amazing tale. I can’t wait for the next book!
Loved this. I mean, it took me a couple times to get started, but once I did, it’s awesome. I’m a sucker for strong character arcs and banter, and this was full of that. But it’s really a well-rounded story with lots of elements to love. World-Building and action-y parts and all of that jazz. And even though it’s an adult-targeted book, it’s clean and you just don’t always get that nowadays.
I listened to the audio version, and it added another layer to the story for me. Prefect for a long car ride. However, since we all had headphones in, my brother kept giving me the side-eye for laughing at random moments. But he’ll have to get over it, because I have the whole boxset/trilogy to get through and I’m not stopping now. Lol.
I loved this read. It went from Alaric desperate to find a cure for his wife into an epic adventure of rescuing a world from an ancient evil. This epic adventure seemingly has been done countless times, but Andrews does a superb job of making it seem like the first time. While creating an amazing supporting cast, Alaric is at center stage to draw us in and keep us engaged. I loved this character. He was true, showing us that many of the most hard fought battle happen inside one’s own heart and spirit. We watch as he must deal with stopping the imminent doom discovered when in his heart a struggle of epic proportions continues to wage and threaten to shatter him. We feel his grief at his wife’s suffering and the lengths he has already gone to find the cure. What it has done to him in a sense, but he still can’t allow himself to say goodbye. He shows us as one of the character’s says at some point, “We aren’t defined only by our darkest choices. There is much more to us than those. Our pasts our complicated, what we’ve done, what has happened to us, but the beauty of life is that each day, we choose again which parts of that past we will allow to shape our actions.” And that is a comforting truth with the battles that sometimes we find ourselves fighting. This is an incredible read, one of love, sacrifice, and seeing hope even in the darkest places.
Epic fantasy at its best.
Vibrant characters, great world building and a page-turner of a story.
The Keeper, the elf, the bumbling magic weaver, a blacksmith and a milkmaid. A rather eclectic group to journey with on their adventures, but all the more enjoyable for it. A journey that is not solely physical, it’s also a journey of the mind and heart.
The effortless way in which ideas, the characters and their actions are woven seamlessly into a compelling story that makes this such a joy to read. A skill usually unnoticed, except in its absence.
This was a fun adventure set in a classic fantasy world and featuring the same sort of group of adventurers that has become the norm in so many books since the days of Tolkien. And yet it’s anything but the norm. Without giving away spoilers let’s just say things don’t just follow the predictable path. Our hero is complex, the story both subtle in how it handles things like the layers in said hero, and loud in the real fun of the adventure. It’s a very well written book with a strong plot and a great group of supporting characters. Really enjoyable.
Classic yet Original Fantasy! This book has something for everyone to enjoy!
Now that I’ve read it, I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!!!
