Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, … million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

Beautifully written, thoughtful and realistic characters and a moving, rich depiction of the culture.
raises awareness of important issues.
This book presented a new way for me to see the people of the Mideast.
Its a great great book, making me feel how lucky i am to have a good life and would learn to sympathize to others as i believe everyone struggles with her/his own battle. This stoy is even more dramatic than the kite runner, and about women under Taliban. You might shed tears and then you will treasure and love your family, your friend more. I bought both Vietnamese and English version cuz its a great book
lol
Not a pleasant read, but an eye-opening look at the chaos and oppression during a period of war in Afghanistan and the impact on the people in that period.
The story about family ,loss ,gain and amidst of all these two ladies just make you a cry ball. Read this if you need a good cry.It won’t disappoint you.
Simply great. I believe everyone should read this book.
Best book I’ve ever read. Mr. Hosseni has become my favorite author.
A visceral and harrowing story of brutality and violence, but also of bravery and private triumph.
This book covers 30 years of time in Afghanistan. The story is mainly about two women named Mariam and Laila and it follows them from childhood to adult hood. The book starts with the Soviet invasion and ends with the overthrow of the Taliban. The women are separated in age by about 14 years, but when Laila becomes a teenager, they are thrown together in a situation that brings them from being enemies to sisters. Along the way there is love, heartache, and death in both of their lives.
It is hard to describe too much about this book without giving away the plot, but I think this might be my favorite book of this year. It is going to be hard to beat, and it is only January. The Kite Runner was magnificent and ended up being my favorite book last year, and this book as equally as good. I had a hard time putting it down wanting to read just one more chapter. There is a love story for Laila that you fight for when the boy she loves is torn away from her. There is heartache for Mariam that you wish she could escape from, but she never can. And you learn a lot about what it was like for Afghani women during this time and are thankful for living where you do.
Run to get this book. It is a must read.
I really enjoyed this book though there was a lot of violence in it. But it was realistic and taught me a lot about how women in that part of the world are treated.
Very descriptive writing. I felt like I was in each scene. Informative historical fiction is my favorite genre.
A wonderful read, so well written.
This book is set in Afghanistan and beautifully tells the story of each character involved. Every character has their own presence in the book. The story flows so gracefully without any unwanted pauses. Beautifully written and told by Khaled Hosseini
The Afghan refugee crisis has forced the oppression of a once vibrant country. Today, people around the world have an awareness of the struggles but little understanding or appreciation of the unjust suffering. Khaled Hosseini has provided a story that makes it personal. His character development and visceral narrative provide recognition of the possibility that any of the protagonists could be a family member, friend or neighbour if a similar atrocity ever occurred at home. Hosseini’s use of first person accounts are harrowing. In the end, the reader can only walk away with a more intimant knowledge of the turbulent, volatile history that will provide great empathy for a once peaceful nation.
One of the best books I’ve ever read
Afghans are people just like anybody.
Loved it
sometimes the words listed do not do justice to the book—–amazing story—one that I have kept and always recommending ——and one that I have reread
