Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, … million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

Great author
excellent book
everyone should read this book
It made me grateful of the fact that as a woman i was not born in an oppressive society. My heart goes out to those women who live in male dominated cultures, being denied the ability to think, travel, acquire knowledge and enjoy basic mental freedom. All freedom of thought ability to seek knowledge and to make decisive decisions regarding themselves denied and considered inappropriate. How unfulfilled life must seem to them?
This book stayed with me long after I finished it.
Such an outstanding writer! I loved Kiterunner.
This book, though well written, was disturbing, depressing and difficult to read. However, it is an important book for understanding the severity of the abuse many women experience in this culture.
Parts of this book were difficult to read, but the author is obviously very familiar with his subject and communicates it well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Interesting and informative of events and conditions far removed from my life. The story needed to be told though it is haunting and tragic. It will stay with you long after finishing the book. As sad as some of the scenes were, I could not put the book down. I read it several years ago and have not forgotten it. Worth the read if you can take the reality of it.
What value is the life of a woman? What makes her worthy of life? It depends on where, when, and to whom you’re born …
A story of two women and the importance of friendships.
Highly recommend this book.
This is one of my all time favorites! The author brings the characters to life in a way that makes them unforgettable! So vivid, it was like actually being in Afghanistan under the Taliban. I cried for the women in this story and felt such empathy for their suffering. A wonderful book that everyone should read!
Beautifully written! Almost as good as The Kite Runner
I found this to be an interesting but sad and, at times, horrific view of life in Afghanistan, as experienced by Moslem women, as the country slowly sinks into the mire of repression and increasing poverty under the Taliban.
Very well written and unforgettable
One of my favorite books of all time.
read it with my book club – excellent discussion
I couldn’t stop reading this book, it was so tragic but so good. Wonderful characters, great writing.
Fantastic read!
You know you’ve read a great book when you can’t stop thinking about it. Feel empathy for the characters and wonder how the rest of their lives turned out. Opened my eye to what the lives of the Afghan people have lived through. So tragic!
