Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, … million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

My absolutely favorite book! This book touched my heart. I have read it twice and listened to an abridged version and will probably read it again in the future. While some people read only non-fiction to learn about other countries and their people, I feel that books like this and his earlier book The Kite Runner have given me more understanding and empathy for Afghanistan and its people.
It was amazingly define the love between a sister and a brother
Excellent read
I read this book years ago but I remember then I liked it
Honestly-one of the best books I’ve read! It brings to life what is happening in this world right to the heart! It should be on everyone’s reading list!
This was a difficult read. So much abuse and violence. Perfect ending, though.
I read it a long time ago and the tragedy of it is still with me
Book 3 from this author of The Kite Runner. Love his work, loved this book.
An eye opener of life in the Afghanistan and the role of women and children
This is my favorite book, of all time…so far. My husband also loved this book. Over the years I have purchased a dozen copies, at thrift stores, to give to friends. This book gave me a realistic and informative look at what life is like in Afghanistan for woman and children. If not for this book I would unfortunately be clueless as to the treatment they endure. I think this book should be required reading for all high-school students.
Could not put down!
The best book written by Kahled Hosseini, if you Like the “Kite Runner” you will love this book.
DO NOT MISS
This is a great book to learn the world of the Islamic women’s life. Although I hope not all the men are so mean to their wives as in this book. The many religious laws they have to obey is mind blogging. An to say wives and women are not looked at as equals to men is shocking .
Loved this book. The author’s Kite Runner was so good that I had to read this.
T
Great book!
Not as good as the Kite Runner
A wonderful book. One of my favorite’s. So beautifully written.
The writer takes you on an unbelievable journey. I can’t believe the tears I shed. What a great movie this would make, but screenplay would shorten the journey. A must read for book clubs.
A more difficult read than the Kite Runner, but equally well-written. Surprisingly, this is a very different kind of love story……and worth knowing.
