Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, … million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

One of my all time favorites!
One of the best current writers. Beautifully written, as always.
Probably a 4 and a half star because it wasn’t as good as Kite Runner, but I’ll round it up since it had such a good narrative. Once again, a great story presented in an easy to read format with lots of tutorial info from Hosseini. The kind of book I like to read. It did get a bit repetitive in a few places and dragged a bit, but overall, a real good read.
It so makes me appreciate the opportunities I have and enjoy.
One of the great reads!
The story gives a brief history of Afghanistan. The characters are well portrayed and quite engaging. I enjoyed the book, however not as much as the Kite Runner.
I gave it 4* because the love story needed to be more elaborate.
Its an un-put-down-able book…..you’ll feel like readidng without stopping. Loved this loved
Very well written
A wonderful story with well-drawn characters.
Wonderful characters
Harrowing, informative read.
Simply an exquisite novel. Riveting atmospheric story so beautifully written with finely drawn characters.
One of my favorite reads of all time! Characters are well developed encouraging understanding of another culture
My absolute favorite book ever! I learned so much and I loved the ending because it isn’t like most American books!! I fell in love with some of the characters and felt like I was beside them only I could not punch their suppressors, not because I wasn’t there but because if I was, I would be vulnerable like the characters I learned so much about. I don’t usually like reading but I couldn’t put this down!!! If you are looking for a good book that you just can’t put down this is it! (Or at least for me it is)!
Literally one of the best fictional books I’ve ever read. And I’ve read a lot of books.
One of the best books I’ve ever read!! Would give it 10 stars if I could.
unforgetable, moving and insightful
The women in the middle east are not free or respected. Things have not changed since this book was published in 2007. Read it for information’ remember it with love.
Magnificent!!!
