Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, … million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

Engaging realistic story. Also loved The Kite Runner. Read it!!!
A very difficult book to read, but worth the effort. A story of two Afghan women, their place in their culture, how they learn to deal with the life they have been handed and their developing friendship over decades. I recently reread this book and it was just as good the second time. This author has an incredible ability to relate the realities of life in Afghanistan.
I love this author.
This book was amazing! I picked it as our class novel and my peers seemed to like it. The brokenness of Afghanistan is portrayed in a realistic fashion, yet there is still hope for the protagonists. This makes the book an interesting and thrilling read. I’d recommend it to teens and adults alike.
Not as good as The Kite Runner, but very good. Awaiting more books by this author.
Unforgettable,, very inspirational story
One of the best books I have ever read. A deeply moving story. You will remember this novel for a long time.
Absolutely tragic and wonderful page Turner.
So much to learn about other cultures!
I love his work. I have read all of his books and anxiously await the next.
My favorite book by this author so far!
Almost as good as The Kite Runner.
This is one book that I will re-read…probably many times. It has been years since I read it and I read many many books a year but this is one I’ll never forget.
Great read
Simply an excellent book!
I felt so much. So much that is shrouded in the world we live in and the way we live it …
I loved this book. I was so moved while reading it I literally forgot where I was geographically. I sobbed at the end I was so engrossed in it yet it didn’t have a tragic ending. Everything turned out fine. It was very believable.
This novel introduced me to Afghan culture and Afghan life lived through relentless violence. It led me to think a lot about the difference between events and process: our news usually reports only events, without the context of the lives they affect. This novel spreads out the tapestry of Afghani life: the brutality of orthodox behavior (from men encouraged to beat their wives to the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas), the oppression of women, the everyday struggle of poverty. I really cared about the “women” portrayed in this novel: I flinched when they were beaten, I cried when they died. I’m deeply grateful to Khaled Hosseini for sharing his knowledge and insight with the the rest of the world.
So moving. Couldn’t put it down. The most wonderful descriptive language
Lives up to the author’s Kite Runner.
Describes life in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban regime. It is an educational experience as well as a wonderful read. It was exciting to me that the characters end up in the location of my boarding school, Murree, Pakistan.
