Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, … million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

I couldn’t put the book down. The Kite Runner was good, but there were a few sections where I wasn’t as engaged. A Thousand Splendid Suns was absolutely incredible. I read it all in a few days because I just wanted to keep reading; there were no dull spots, and as in the first book, the writing was perfect. I am looking forward to reading And the Mountains Echoed soon.
This book is one of my favorite novels. I have read in a few times and referred it to friends and co-workers. A glimpse into a culture that holds a place in my heart revealing that women still suffer hardship and violence and yet can overcome through love.
I own the paperback copy and ebook.
Read this long ago. Reread it recently. One of my favorites!
Lyrical
Tough read but still a great book
I love it when I learn something while enjoying a book. I was fascinated by the peek into a culture different from my own. By the time I finished this book, I wanted to know more…………
Well developed characters. Very informative about the plight of women in Afghanistan under Extremists rulers.
This book opens a window to a way of life that was new to me. Challenged me to think outside the box and my comfort level.
My husband is reading it now because I highly recommended it. It is very disturbing to see how women are treated in other countries. I always feel so blessed living in the greatest country in the world. This book stays with you for a very long time.
This novel follows The Kite Runner but is its own tale of cultural clash, love, loss, and friendship. Mystical.
One of the best unveiling stories not only on Afghanistan but also in general on life.
brilliant story telling that will move even the hardest of hearts…
An unbelievable story of the women in an Afghan country, cultural acceptance, and their perseverance to survive. Heart-wrenching moments, but I just could not stop reading about these remarkable women.
I love, love, love this author. I would read the phone book if he wrote it. Do yourself a favor and read everything he’s ever written.
Khaled Hosseini is a brilliant story-teller. It’s a heart-wrenching story of two Afghan girls named Mariam and Laila. Mariam, being an illegitimate child, faces the curses of society for the sin she has never committed. At a tender age of 15, she is forced to marry a man decades older than her. The man does not have any difficulty in finding a n excuse to give her a thrashing every now and then. In contrast, Laila has a happier childhood with her friend, Tariq, even amidst the hell of wars. She dreams of a life with Tariq but fate has its own plans. The missiles pull them apart and this is when Laila’s life intersects Mariam’s. They share a common man, a man who is decades older than them!
Excellent! Glorious,
Excellent read!
I think it is a great book in terms of learning life lessons
A really interesting tale about Afghanistan during a time of transition. The characters are well developed, and you are cheering for both of them throughout the novel. Plus, the story line is amazing!
Nowhere near as good as the warbling led me to believe, but readable.
