In this charming mystery from the bestselling author of The Cats Came Back, two magical cats have powers of detection that prove indispensable to librarian Kathleen Paulson… will need to rely on them more than ever when a twenty-year-old scandal leads to murder…
The arrival of the Janes brothers has the little town of Mayville Heights buzzing. Everyone of a certain age remembers when Victor had an affair with Leo’s wife, who then died in a car accident.
Now it seems the brothers are trying to reconcile, until Kathleen finds Leo dead. The police set their sights on Leo’s son and Kathleen’s good friend Simon, who doesn’t have much of an alibi. To prove her friend innocent, Kathleen will have to dig deep into the town’s history—and into her sardine cracker supply, because Owen and Hercules don’t work for free…

A Tale of Two Kitties is a fun, unique, interesting and all around good cozy mystery.
Hercules and Owen are cats with magical abilities that help them to help Kathleen in solving crimes. I laughed at how they are typical cats with being persnickety and moody. They are a big help to Kathleen when she has to solve a murder and prove her friends innocence. With her cats help will she be able to and find the real murderer?
This book has all the right ingredients for a wonderful read. For me since I had not ready any of the other books in the series, it took me a little bit to be drawn into the book. Once I did though I couldn’t put it down. I like a good puzzle with unpredictable outcomes and that fits this book. I really got a kick out of the interactions between the cats, Hercules and Owen and others. This is a mystery for people who love cats, a good puzzling mystery with interesting characters and a little bit of magic. It shows how sometimes our past still finds away to effect our present. It is a good fun book.
I recieved this book for my honest opinion and review.
I jumped into this series at book nine and although I didn’t have a lot of background, I was able to follow the story. Kathleen is a very relatable character and lives in charming Mayville Heights, Minnesota. The Carnegie library where she works is central to the story. The library has agreed to take care of and display a cache of old photos and letters found in the local post office during a remodel. The letters and pictures play into the story of the Janes twins. Years earlier identical twins stopped speaking to each other when Victor ran away with Leo’s wife. Rumor had it that Meredith realized her mistake and was on her way back to Mayville Heights when she was killed in an accident.
Mia, the library student, is Leo’s granddaughter and is thrilled to have her grandfather back in town. Everyone is waiting on pins and needles to see if the twins reunite until Kathleen finds Leo murdered. Mia’s dad, Simon, is implicated in the murder and Kathleen and the cats get involved to save Mia and her father. I like that the cats have magical powers but that this doesn’t distract from the main story. This book reminds me of one of my favorite authors, Lilian Jackson Braun,
who wrote the “Cat Who” series.
Owen and Hercules are a nice addition to the story. The story is a comfortable pace and I look forward to reading more in the series.
A Tale of Two Kitties by Sofie Kelly is the ninth book in the A Magical Cats Mystery series. When Kathleen finds Mia’s grandfather dead, she and her magical cats, Owen and Hercules, have to find out who the killer is before Simon, her good friend and father to Mia, is arrested for the crime.
I had a hard time getting through this book. It was very slow paced, and the writing was choppy. There was far too much description. How someone holds their arms, or tilts their head does not add any value or depth to the story. It became very mundane. The story was very predictable from the start.
I have enjoyed all the books in this series.
Enjoyable story! Will read more by this author.
A sweet mystery with two adorable cats! I enjoyed the story!
I really enjoyed the characters
I read a lot of cozy mysteries, and this is my very favorite series and favorite author. Owen and Hercules (the magical cats) are a hoot with their dogged (sorry!) determination.to help solve the mystery.
I love this author and this series with the kitties. They are so amazing.
I love this series, it is so fun. Owen and Hercules are such cure little kitties. The humans are pretty entertaining as well. Kathleen is drawn into another murder. Young Mia, her library worker, loses her grandfather by an unknown assailant. Kathleen is the one to find the body and wants to find the person who killed Leo. There are numerous suspects. Kathleen’s boyfriend (Marcus) is the police detective on the case.
The characters are so fun. I love them all. The best characters are Hercules and Owen. The story is moves quickly and has lots of twists. I was surprised with the reveal and the motive.
I love the kitties, who have the often-suspected talents of disappearing, or of walking through walls. The mystery is pretty good too.
Being both a cat fan and a mystery buff, I really enjoy this series…great for a Sunday afternoon read!
I couldn’t get into this book at all. Having read page after page waiting for anything of interest to be imparted, or for something of interest to happen, to draw me into the story, the protagonist had still been swanning around a library, apparently for the purpose of collecting effusive compliments from secondary and peripheral characters, all of whom had seemed equally dull and uninteresting. Apparently, the compliments were to provide the reader with a saccharine-perfect image of the protagonist, while the protagonist’s thoughts as she’d encountered, observed, and exchanged mundane dialogue with other characters was to provide background on characters and related information concerning previous appearances in prior books in the series. Instead of being an effective and efficient introduction to the characters, it had dragged on and on and on in the same vein, with page after page of boring encounters, lame dialogue, and entirely uninteresting observations of people repeatedly standing, walking, leaving, entering, sitting, and crossing rooms, along with descriptions of completely ordinary attire, movements, and activities which had done very little to actually set a scene, invoke any interest in the parade of characters, or compel one to keep reading. A highly convenient argument viewed at a distance from a window, between two characters for which a reader has yet been given any cause to vest any interest, can hardly be considered a page-turning catalyst–or, at least, it hadn’t been for me. I’d moved on to other books on Kindle, have not returned to this book, and probably never will.
This series has a satisfied and loyal following who have quite enjoyed this series, so perhaps the earlier books had been much more compelling, and the initial introductions and histories of the recurring characters more interesting as those had occurred and evolved, but I cannot recommend this book as a starting point for any prospective readers of this series. Start with the first book if you think this series might interest you, because the beginning of this book was insipid at best.
this is a really GOOD author.. have enjoyed all her books
I haven’t read anything by Sofie Kelly that I don’t love, and this book is no different. Engaging characters, wonderful “special” kitties, great plot and writing that flows are what make this book (and the rest of the series) exceptional.
Fun
I will read more by this author. I loved the cats! Just a little too wordy.
Enjoyable characters, quirky cats, stirred together with wit and humor. Will read more of the series
Fun cats with magical powers.
This is a Fyn read — as most of this author’s book are!
