I do love a good Christmas story filled with happiness, the reason for the season, and all the goodness Christmas can bring. This had all of it. It also read rather slow for me at times. The keeping secrets and outright lying because Lottie’s X was a douche, took up way too much of the book. For years I’ve read that scenario and it always causes very predictable problems. Both Jay and Lottie had been burned, but neither faced their part in what was just not meant to be. I didn’t connect with their own romance so much, they were too busy with their jobs and their own issues. I thought it had a good start, but outside forces can be a big pain. Even lovable Trevor had impeccable timing–NOT LoL.
Lottie’s sister, Steph, and her girls needed their own book with all the ups and downs. The twins were adorable, really, the school play was an added plus, and a twist in the road of Jay’s bah humbug attitude.
I do wish that gorgeous wedding would’ve been Jay and Lottie’s, though it was still awesome and she handled every altercation beautifully, no matter whose it was.
The area was well described and sounded like a beautiful winter wonderland.
I’m happy to have read it and thank the publisher, thru Netgalley, for providing a copy. These are all my own thoughts and opinions willingly written out.
This is a sweet Christmas romance that I did enjoy reading; it’s a real curl up on a winters day sort of read. Set in Lake District it is full of charm and Christmas magic, plus some snow of course. With a wealth of endearing characters, plus a few who aren’t quite so loveable, this story sucked me in and kept me reading avidly.
Lottie is the main character, an event planner at a new wedding and event venue. She is full of enthusiasm and ideas and looking forward to her new life, after the break up of her relationship. I liked Lottie a lot and really wanted her to be happy. Jay is her new neighbour who also works on the estate, he is a closed-off character but slowly thaws. The characters are all well written and very lifelike. I did enjoy meeting them all and cheering them on throughout the story.
This is a charming festive read and one all romance readers will love.
A Surprise Christmas Wedding by Phillipa Ashley is a most delightful contemporary novel that will make you feel festive.
The novel is set in the Lake District in the lead up to Christmas. Phillipa Ashley has perfectly captured the scene as we ‘walk’ through woods near Keswick. Her characters are wonderfully drawn, warm and welcoming. The reader really feels included in the novel.
We witness the importance of family – family that is there to support you through thick and thin. When cracks appear in relationships, they need to be mended because family is what really matters – from the oldest to the youngest – including a dog called Trevor and a wonderful pair of five year old twins who will delight the reader. Their mannerisms have been perfectly captured by the author.
As well as the festive season approaching, there is a wedding to plan – interestingly on 19th December, the same day as our daughter’s anniversary – so I could really envisage the Christmas wedding. An overnight snowfall adds an interesting twist.
Hearts have been broken and trust eroded but bitterness will destroy us from the inside out. We need to take a chance and learn to live and love and trust again.
I adored A Surprise Christmas Wedding. I could not put it down. Phillipa Ashley created a wonderful read. I cannot wait to read more by her.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
4 star review of A Surprise Christmas Wedding by Phillipa Ashley
Lottie has been through o much since her fiance Connor, left her at the altar. Offered her dream job as an event coordinator in Firholme in the Lake District, she is determined to move on with her life. The fact that she has a hunky neighbour Jay is an added bonus.
However her dream job turns into a nightmare when the groom to be for the wedding she is planning turns out to be her ex Connor.
Lottie will need to dig deep to plan the perfect wedding for the happy couple. Will the magic of the Christmas season bring Lottie the happiness she deserves.
A Surprise Christmas was full of quirky characters that were entertaining to read about. It was a heart warming and enjoyable read.
I received a copy of this book, through the publisher via Netgalley.
This is another lovely book from one of my favorite UK authors. Her stories let me escape real life and enter a world where there are problems, but having love ones near always helps.
In this story the two main characters, Lottie and Jay, are both dealing with betrayal and trust issues. Lottie is ready to go on with her life and she is just what Jay needs to help him let go and begin living again.
After reading a realistic historical book prior to this one, it was a joy to enter the world created by Phillipa Ashley and just have pure relaxation, knowing all would work out to a happy ending. Ms. Ashley has a great talent for creating characters that I care about. She also describes the scenery beautifully and I feel transported physically to the Firholme Estate while reading. This book also has an adorable and slightly misbehaved black Labrador named Trevor, who is a great comic relief to the bits of serious issues in the story.
I want to thank Avon Books UK for giving me the pleasure of reading the advance reader copy of this book. My review is my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.
