Park ranger Anna Pigeon returns, in a mystery that unfolds in and around Lake Superior, in whose chilling depths sunken treasure comes with a deadly price. In her latest mystery, Nevada Barr sends Ranger Pigeon to a new post amid the cold, deserted, and isolated beauty of Isle Royale National Park, a remote island off the coast of Michigan known for fantastic deep-water dives of wrecked sailing … sailing vessels. Leaving behind memories of the Texas high desert and the environmental scam she helped uncover, Anna is adjusting to the cool damp of Lake Superior and the spirits and lore of the northern Midwest. But when a routine application for a diving permit reveals a grisly underwater murder, Anna finds herself 260 feet below the forbidding surface of the lake, searching for the connection between a drowned man and an age-old cargo ship. Written with a naturalist’s feel for the wilderness and a keen understanding of characters who thrive in extreme conditions, A Superior Death is a passionate, atmospheric page-turner.

I haven’t read another book by Nevada Barr, so cannot speak for any other than this one. I didn’t care for it. It was like she was creating actions as she wrote to keep it suspenseful but nothing was even close to cohesive. Anyone who writes that moose are a herd species needs to do more research. Living in Alaska, that put me off right away. I found the characters stranger than necessary, though some were normal. I give this 3 stars because I know it would appeal to some, and it certainly kept moving. Other than that blah.
So many people never learn “that rare sense of knowing, at the moment it was happening, that she was happy, that life was okay.” Beautiful descriptions of the lake and unusual comparisons to the southwestern desert warm this Michigander’s heart.
My favorite author. You’ll love this one.
One of my all time favorite books. Great setting. All the elements of a first class mystery. Hard to put down, harder to forget.
Love all of her books!
One of Nevada Bars best books. She is always a fantastic read! I am a faithful followers of her books.
Wonderful setting
I enjoyed this book but was expecting it to be on the Minnesota side of the lake.
love her work
I like Barr’s books about the parks and reserves. We have traveled and been to a lot of them and reading about some that we haven’t been to makes me want to visit most of more. Also she writes a good story.
Ranger Pigeon goes to
Lake Superior, finds a child molester, a murderer and a thief of cultural artifacts. She also survives two attempts on her but who’s counting and blows up a blackmail plot. It works very well. I really enjoyed this book
I love all of Nevada Barr books
Felt like I was in the national park… evocative.
One of my favorite authors and one of my favorite protagonists! Her plots are always very exciting!
I have enjoyed almost all novels by Nevada Barr. I learn new things about many of our National Parks, while reading these mysteries.
I think Nevada Barr is a terrific author. A person can step into where and enjoy the trip and mystery with her as a park ranger.
Murder and intrigue in one of the most isolated and unique National Parks. Nevada Barr has a gift for descriptive prose helping the reader, through park ranger Anna Pigeon understand the beauty of our parks our place in the world and how human nature can effect that balance. I recommend this book and all the Anna Pigeon seriex.
Always interesting to read the unexpected twists of Nevada Barr’s books
I have very much enjoyed all of the Nevada Barr books I’ve read. Even so, I thought this one was especially good.
I read anything by Nevada Barr. Character, Anna, is the greatest.
