A short and easy read that doesn’t shy away from topics like drug addiction or the trauma of rape but keeps its upbeat tone. it suffers from a case of the instalove that’s so common in YA, but isn’t obnoxious about it. a good start to a mystery series.
I would never recommend this book.
Diverting mystery; fun to read with familiar laughs, sort of like watching “Rocky and Bullwinkle.”
The premise, that the great-great-granddaughter and g-g-grandson of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson find themselves at the same boarding school in Connecticut where mayhem conveniently ensues is cute. Some of the details are pretty outlandish, like Charlotte Holmes’s laboratory in a maintenance closet, but what the heck: their great-great-grandsires were pretty outlandish too.
I did think that the author poured on the teenage angst a bit heavily, but it has been several (!) decades since I was a teenager, so what do I know at this point? What I CAN say is that the book was great fun. Be aware, however, that they will nail you for 10 bucks apiece for the sequels, so if you’re easily addicted to book series, you may get in trouble again.
A contemporary novel that follows the lives of currently-teenaged Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson—decedents of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. The characters have the intellect and eccentricities of their forefathers. In addition to mystery, murders, and mayhem, there is a tremendous focus on the use of drugs; apparently, the author feels it runs in the Holmes bloodline. The story—told from Watson’s point of view— is well crafted.
This modern YA series about the descendants of Holmes and Watson is clever, gripping, and delightful. The final book comes out next year, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
If there was ever a loving ode to Sherlock Holmes, its this book. I LOVED IT!!!! And I will tell you as someone who has read both the original stories and a plethora of fanfiction (good, bad, and enraging), this was very well done. The twist in this story is that the Sherlock is a teenage girl and the Watson is a teenage boy. I was prepared to hate the dynamic because the core of the books was the friendship between the main characters, but Brittany Cavallaro managed to balance the integrity of that friendship with teenage hormones. I will be reading more!
While A Study in Charlotte is a little outside of the realm of what I normally read, I decided to give it a shot. And I’m so glad that I did.
I thought this was an insanely clever idea. The descendents of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson ending up at the same boarding school and teaming up to solve a mystery that they’re being framed for? Um, yes please!
I wavered between giving this 4 or 5 stars. The biggest negative aspect of the book, in my opinion, is how casually Holmes’ drug use is treated. I mean, the girl has a SERIOUS drug problem, but it’s treated as if that is perfectly normal and just what teens do. That really rubbed me the wrong way.
But the story was entertaining enough that I could look past it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am glad I decided to branch out and try something new.
Enjoyed this fan-fic. I’ll take anything Holmes and Watson, thank you very much.
I liked this well enough, but did have a few issues with it. I found the pacing a bit uneven, stretches that weren’t holding my attention. I also found this very dark and depressing in spots. I don’t normally read much YA and am not very versed in Sherlock/Holmes lore so that may have made a difference for me. I loved the humor and will probably give the next book a read. 3.75/5
I’m a Sherlock Holmes fan from way back and even though I’m an adult, I enjoy YA. This is one of the better books I’ve read in a long time. The idea is that Sherlock’s great-great granddaughter Charlotte Holmes teams up with John Watson’t great-great grandson Jamie Watson (who’d really prefer to be called James, but no one does) at a boarding school in Connecticut. When a bullying, nasty student is murdered, the method of the murder suggest that Charlotte and Jamie are responsible. There are many twists and turns and background revealed in this book. I think there will be a sequel. I surely hope so.
