The Whitshanks are one of those families that radiate an indefinable kind of specialness, but like all families, their stories reveal … families that radiate an indefinable kind of specialness, but like all families, their stories reveal only part of the picture: Abby and Red and their four grown children have accumulated not only tender moments, laughter, and celebrations, but also jealousies, disappointments, and carefully guarded secrets. From Red’s parents, newly arrived in Baltimore in the 1920s, to the grandchildren carrying the Whitshank legacy boisterously into the twenty-first century, here are four generations of lives unfolding in and around the sprawling, lovingly worn house that has always been their anchor.

I Recommend
This was a book that, for me, kind of trod along at an event pace. I didn’t get excited and start flipping through the pages as fast as I could to see what would happen next. But it was a comfortable and endearing read.
This book was a view into a normal, though quirky, family. You have the opportunity to get to know each character really well …
Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of her best.
I like this book. The characters in the family are so unique from one another but that’s what makes the family interesting. I live in Baltimore and can relate to all of the places they talk about in the book. Quick easy read.
I stopped reading this book after about a third of the way through. It was dry and tedious. I am a huge fan of Tyler’s early books. This one didn’t do it for me.
I must confess that I have read all of Anne Tyler’s books at least once. That said, this one really resonated with me. The characters in this family are very real and very authentic, yet many are also quite lovable. If you have a family…. you will enjoy meeting this one!
Although all of Anne Tyler’s books are wonderful, I thought this one was just a touch less up to her usual quality. It’s been awhile since I read this so I would have to reread it again to remember the details of why, which really wouldn’t be a bad idea. They are always very entertaining and readable.
another excellent Anne Tyler novel
Loved this book. Everyone has baggage from their upbringing and each family member seems to have their place in the family — sometimes a real disadvantage
A book about the Whitshank family, their home, their parents and grandparents. How Junior, the grandfather, built and bought the home.
Ok you guys, to be honest, I didn’t understand the point. The only storyline I semi-cared about was the Junior/Lynnie-Mae relationship. I liked him and I liked her. Other characters were blah.
I don’t recommend …
When I first started reading, I wasn’t sure if I would keep reading it. It made me sad reading about the mom and dad in their later years. I keep thinking, is this all there is to getting old. But I kept reading and I was glad I did. The author brings in to focus their younger lives and you can tell these people really loved and lived. I wanted …
Excellent. Characters are so real!
The Whitshanks have their stories. Abby, the matriarch of the family, has a favorite one: the day she fell in love with Red, her husband. This is a close family. But they are not without their problems and challenges. Like any other family, they have the “black sheep” of the family. They also have arguments, jealousies and insecurities. And like …
I love how Anne Tyler tells a story. You’re dropped right in the middle of family life and walk through it with them. I’ve read many of her stories. I’m left here without a real idea of how the story ends. I get where we went in the middle, but I want more about Denny. I didn’t like him at all, but want to know more. Still a good read and I …
Love Anne Tyler! Beautiful writing.
I didn’t really care for this book. It was hard to get in to.
We all have a past beyond what others see. This story takes you on a journey to a present family and all that life can send at them. From the present you go backwards. Each member of the family giveing there story. Generation of a family and how they became who they are.
Another delightful family story from Anne Tyler.
Not my favorite Anne Tyler book.
