BEST NOVEL OF THE YEAR, BRITISH FANTASY SOCIETY • Discover the magical beginning of Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth seriesXanth was the enchanted land where magic ruled—where every citizen had a special spell only he could cast. It was a land of centaurs and dragons and basilisks. For Bink of North Village, however, Xanth was no fairy tale. He alone had no magic. And unless he got some—and got … unless he got some—and got some fast!—he would be exiled. Forever. But the Good Magician Humfrey was convinced that Bink did indeed have magic. In fact, both Beauregard the genie and the magic wall chart insisted that Bink had magic. Magic as powerful as any possessed by the King or by Good Magician Humfrey—or even by the Evil Magician Trent.
Be that as it may, no one could fathom the nature of Bink’s very special magic. Bink was in despair. This was even worse than having no magic at all . . . and he would still be exiled!
Thus begins Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth series. . . .

I have been a fan since the xanth and Castle Roogna novels. This author’s novels are always entertaining and will drag you into his world’s and make you want to stay
This is the first Xanth novel and I absolutely loved it. I read many more after it and could never wait for the next one to come out. I loved how the two worlds existed together and Xanth looked like Florida or sometimes like Italy. Piers Anthony was a very clever author and the way magic worked in Xanth was a new and unusual way of making in …
Read all of these books in the series.
it was great! i love the first ten or so of the Xanth series. they do get a bit repetitive after that, but still interesting. i never read anything by piers anthony that wasnt fun to read.
The Xanth series was one of the first fantasy series I ever read. The world of puns absolutely hooked and inspired me.
If I had never come across this book, I would have never written the Blue Unicorn’s Journey To Osm. I loved how Piers Anthony gave clever new meanings to ordinary words and phrases. I wanted to visit the worlds he created and that made me want to create worlds of my own for others to immerse themselves in.
One of my personal favorites, definitely recommend no matter what types of books you like because there’s something there for everyone, I don’t usually read fantasy books but I fell in love with this book, must read the second and third book as well (The Source of Magic, Castle Roogna).
The first Xanth book, and arguably the best (though, the first eight were among my favorite fantasy novels). Great set-up and storytelling. “Spell” keeps me thoroughly entertained every time I read it.
A great series, especially for children, but good for adults as well.
This and its sequels are some of my favorite books. A fun fantasy filed with puns and a surprise ending.
I love puns…
I have loved this series for at least 30 years, and now my son is hooked and anxiously awaiting the next book.
The beginning of the Xanth series. A MUST read. Love the puns!
I read this years ago and recently reread it. It’s not really a book for adults.
The start of an amazing fantasy series. but be warned. this series is based on puns. still very inventive.
Mr. Anthony has his finger on the funny bone. Hilarious.
I loved everything about this book. I read this book around the age of 13 and two weeks ago (at the age of 60) I reread it and guess what? It was just as mesmerizing and entertaining to me as it was when I was a teenager. Mr. Anthony has created a wonderful world in Xanth (especially if you love puns like I do). I have read every one of his 33 …
Fun read…great story, Anthony nailed this one
This is the first of his pun books and in my mind the best.
Have read and re-read this book a number of times. The best of the Xanth series in my opinion.
