BEST NOVEL OF THE YEAR, BRITISH FANTASY SOCIETY • Discover the magical beginning of Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth seriesXanth was the enchanted land where magic ruled—where every citizen had a special spell only he could cast. It was a land of centaurs and dragons and basilisks. For Bink of North Village, however, Xanth was no fairy tale. He alone had no magic. And unless he got some—and got … unless he got some—and got some fast!—he would be exiled. Forever. But the Good Magician Humfrey was convinced that Bink did indeed have magic. In fact, both Beauregard the genie and the magic wall chart insisted that Bink had magic. Magic as powerful as any possessed by the King or by Good Magician Humfrey—or even by the Evil Magician Trent.
Be that as it may, no one could fathom the nature of Bink’s very special magic. Bink was in despair. This was even worse than having no magic at all . . . and he would still be exiled!
Thus begins Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth series. . . .

So creative,…read it when I was a teen.
First of a “world” series. Amusing take on what we want and wish for. Welcome to Xanth. Enjoyable
These books are so punny. I laughed so hard while reading this series. I mean gut busting laughs.
Love the author. One of my first fantasy series. Fun read.
Do you want the ordinary guy to discover that he is actually a powerful person? Do you enjoy whimsy along the way? Then you will love this book.
The characters are original and engaging. The plot twists are a little scary and delightful. Have fun.
It’s a cute story, but the SCREAMINGLY blatant misogyny spoils it for me.
Based on the sexist notion that beauty and brains are mutually exclusive in women (but of course, concurrent in men), that being a meglomaniac is fine as long as you’re smart and worthy enough to rule, and that taking advantage of women is heroic. All written by an author who explicitly condones pedophilia in multiple books and series (including …
Anotger fantastic series. It is irreverent and tongue in cheek. Very entertaining light hearted reading!
This book started me down the Piers Anthony road. What a ride!
This is an awesome introduction to Xanth
It’s Zanth
Early xanth books great fun but got darker as they went along. Still a fun read
Incredibpy misogynistic garbagebwhat the HELL.
I’ve been reading the Xanth series for over 40 years. This book started it all, what a journey these characters have taken, and many generations of characters to follow. My daughters were always avid readers, but I use these books to get teen-aged boys to read, they love them!
Being an inveterate punster myself, I enjoy Piers Anthony’s Xanth series.
The start of a pretty good series, though not as good as some of the later books it sets the premise for the world. It also introduces several of the major characters of the series. All in all, worth the read.
Made Florida into a magical land! Lots of puns. While lots of fun to read, the story has a deeper meaning in self confidence and worth.
At one time I read this whole series. I love puns and Florida was never so interesting before.
I discovered the Xanth novels more than 20 years ago and I’ve read every one I can get my hands on and own quite a number of them. Mr. Anthony is brilliant in how he perceives the characters and sends them on Quests. I love the flip side kind of idea of our world. This book and EVERY book that follows is fun, quixotic, fun, funny, gripping and …
Love Piers Anthony. My husband and two kids all read this series. So much fun! Read all the series…so much fun
