BEST NOVEL OF THE YEAR, BRITISH FANTASY SOCIETY • Discover the magical beginning of Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth seriesXanth was the enchanted land where magic ruled—where every citizen had a special spell only he could cast. It was a land of centaurs and dragons and basilisks. For Bink of North Village, however, Xanth was no fairy tale. He alone had no magic. And unless he got some—and got … unless he got some—and got some fast!—he would be exiled. Forever. But the Good Magician Humfrey was convinced that Bink did indeed have magic. In fact, both Beauregard the genie and the magic wall chart insisted that Bink had magic. Magic as powerful as any possessed by the King or by Good Magician Humfrey—or even by the Evil Magician Trent.
Be that as it may, no one could fathom the nature of Bink’s very special magic. Bink was in despair. This was even worse than having no magic at all . . . and he would still be exiled!
Thus begins Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth series. . . .

This book is an epic start to a wonderful series. It’s full of puns, plays on words, and a ton of humor. In a world where literally everything can be taken as a literal interpretation of the word from a boot rear drink that literally boots you in the rear, to a pantry that’s a tree full of pants and panties, to a demoness called d-mentia that’s …
Once upon a time I had never heard of Piers Anthony, then a friend gave me this book and said read this. I guarantee you will go looking for more. This book was great! I enjoyed it so much I immediately went out and bought the next one in the series. Then I went out and bought the 3rd and 4th at the same time because I was reading them so fast. …
I love this series, it’s page turning and humorous at the same time with memorable characters.
This is the start of an amazing series by Piers Anthony. The superb use of puns is great. The story line and the use of Florida for geography are great
Great story. I’ve read many of the other story’s in the series. Really enjoyed reading them and other series. Fantastic author.
Some of the most original fantasy I’ve read
Mesmerizes the mind, mam!
A witty satire, easy-to-read and quite fun.
One of my all time Favorite authors’s. Piers Anthony is a Gienus! The Xanath Novels & their play on words & his brilliant writing are a delightful romp to read! For well over 25 years I have had a “Love Affair” going with the every Book Mr Anthony’s written. You won’t be disappointed.
witty, PUN FILLED, Piers at his best
Love all his stuff. Need to get all them again. Found my first copy of this book
in a library “to a good home basket” Been hooked ever since, That was probably ’78 or ’79…
Piers Anthony always makes me smile. If you enjoy fantasy with a lighter side I highly recommend this series.
Great series
I absolutely love the world of Xanth and am blessed to live somewhere between the Ever-Glades and the Gap Chasm.
Don’t miss this world of puns, adventure, and romance.
The opening of the wonderful Xanth series (mildly disguised as a fantasy version of Florida). Loaded with a inexhaustible supply of puns, it will have groaning and laughing at the same time. ESPECIALLY if you’ve ever been to, or currently live, in Florida. I do. Yep…it’s pretty accurate, for Florida.
For those who question the originality of this series you must remember that it came out in the 80’s. It was considered on the edge as were most of his books. As with all things the edge caught up but this is still a jewel to be enjoyed. Happy Reading.
The original Xanth novel. These books kept me company during jr high and high school. While Castle Roogna remains by favorite, this book set the scene, built the world and sent you on a grand adventure. It’s worth reading, because Xanth is a large part of speculative fiction’s history. Don’t feel daunted by the shear number of Xanth books…stick …
Strictly fantasy/science fiction. I read this series back in high school-in the early 1980s! If you like this genre, along the lines of Sword of Shannara, Dragonriders of Pern, Dragonlance, you will like this!
It was difficult for me to get in to this book. It is a funny fantasy, which can enspell the younger audience. I can see myself loving this book if I had read it when I was in middle or high school. One element that I don’t liked about some fantasy is how some uncomfortable circumstances like hunger and having a cold can be too easily resolved …
A lot of fantasy novels take themselves very seriously. It seems a given. This is not like that. It’s a great story, with great characters and world building, but there is a wry sense of humor behind it. For one thing, the central thread holding it all together is the pun. A quick read that led me to reading many of those that followed. Highly …
