I usually don’t EVER do this but PLEASE – DO NOT read this book until you’ve read Part I: A Taste of Shine. If you read this remember that it’s NOT a standalone !! If you read this first you will be confused as hell … Charlie is a natural born assasin who grew up on the streets of Chicago working for a mob boss. Here comes your confusion. Once you read Part I you’ll understand her story so much better. But after meeting Matthew and his brothers she wants what every girl dreams of, a family of her own and a house to settle in at. But can Charlie find her way there, especially when someone is trying to kill her new found happiness. This is so well written you’ll feel just like you were livin the life a moonshiner, running a still in the backwoods of Georgia!! If possible this one would get 6 stars instead of a measley 5!!
Don’t you love it when a favorite author can jump back and forth, front and back into different genres? I do. Mrs. Cain brings a wonderful end to a fantastic story of love, shine, and fist. I would recommend this novella to anyone who enjoys reading the historical genera.
This is not a time period I have ever been interested it, nor is the setting one I would ever have turned to normally. That said, Addison Cain has visited this particular place in history twice now and made me love it both times. The fact she can switch from her DARK fare to this softer, sweeter piece just roves her versatility as an author and her ability to character craft. She makes us feel for Charlie, for Matthew, for everyone… breathing life in all it’s flawed beauty into each person and giving the story real depth and emotion.
The second part in this duo was just as good as the first and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys historically based romance and suspense. The prohibition era isn’t one I have a lot of experience with in my reading, given my lower interest in it, but she made it intriguing and very interesting.
Charlotte is a very strong woman and fierce when it comes to the protecting the people she loves.Matthew is rough around the edges, but he would do anything for Charlotte.Charlie has left, Matthew is trying to track her down.
When I started reading I couldn’t put it down.Addison Cain is magnifysent and amazing writer.I cannot wait to read more of there books.Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this book. Can’t wait for the next book
The second part of the in the Trick of Light Duet.
This book is a lot different then the other books I have read of Addison Cain, but it is also a very familiar in the fact that this book has complex and layered characters and Addison have a beautiful detailed way of writing. It makes everything come to life.
The story takes place during the prohibition in the world of bootleggers and the Chicago Mob.
The relationship between Charlotte and Matthew deepens and Charlotte gets more ingrained into her new home and making friends. I love reading about all the interactions and banter to and fro.
It is a wonderful story of hardship, tragedy, action and love.
This is the second part of A Trick of the Light. It’s an exceptional book, with lots of romance and funny moments. We follow as Charlotte and Matthew continues to build a relationship made harder as gangsters and old wounds interferes. The tension is high as it all leads up to a confrontation between old associates of Charlotte.
This was a really entertaining book by an amazing author.
When reading a book by Adiison Cain you will never know what is going to be on the next page. In this second book of the series I was immediately taken back in time to wonderful story that made me feel like I was a part of and able to engage with the characters. This was a lovely book to add to the wonderful collection of Addison stories. If you pick up this book thinking Addison Cain and dark then you will be pleasantly surprised by this fantastic read.
This is my favorite book by this author! What a great way to end this awesome series. The heroine is not your typical innocent Peggy Sue and I think that’s why I enjoyed this book so much. Charlie is a strong female lead that I would have loved to have been best friends with during those bootlegging days. I liked the attention to detail and depth the author gave to her background, and her character development. The romance definitely gets kicked up a notch from the first book and the reader will not be disappointed with how things heat up between Charlie and our favorite Emerson brother. Such a fun and well written story! Full of adventures and suspense. I don’t want to leave these characters behind so soon maybe a couple short stories in the future? Let’s hope so!
I wasn’t sure what will happen in this second book. I did hope that the Emersons, specifically Matthew, will go after Charlie. Whether or not Charlie returned with them was the bigger question. Every single twist and turn kept me glued to the book. I swear, I got no work done at all – don’t read while you are at work, LOL!
I loved every moment of this book. Although I am used to Addison Cain’s darker romances, I am glad that this book remained on the lighter side. There was one moment in the book that I felt if the line was crossed, I wasn’t sure how I would have felt about it. As much violence and darkness as our characters live through and/or face every day, there was always this innocence in them that made them endearing to me.
I do hope this isn’t the end for the Emersons. There’s still Nathaniel and Eli so I hope Addison Cain will continue. I mean, I really hope that Emerson’s Finest Whiskey makes it big!
I loved the conclusion to Charlie and Matthew’s story. I had a quick reread of the first part before reading this book; it’s like the honeymoon. Charlie continues to be bold and strong. Even though Charlie believes she is simply a product of her circumstances, she is adept at learning to fit in to all kinds of situations. Matthew’s confidence shines through in this book. I loved the plot in this book-just things I wasn’t expecting, ‘cause the honeymoon is over. Exciting, gritty, swoony.
I am voluntarily reviewing this book.
It’s a Boy!
I love this story. I want to be Charlie when I grow up. This book has love, a bit of mystery and a lot of moonshine! The characters are strong but yet venerable. Life is tough and Charlie knows it. Raised by the “mob” she is more than proficient at fighting and manipulation. She does what has to be done. She single minded and keeps going on until what needs to be done is done. Matthew is as adapt as Charlie is. At first he seems rough around the edges but behind all that redneck demeanor is a keen mind. I hope you enjoy this series.
A Shot in the Dark is the very satisfying conclusion to A Trick of the Light. Addison Cain is able to craft compelling stories that include characters that are both strong and vulnerable, who’s moral code is crystal clear, and showcases them at their best and worst moments. I wouldn’t want to live in the worlds she creates, but I get an enormous amount of enjoyment from reading about them. Can’t wait for her next release.
This was a fantastic follow up to A Trick of the Light!
The story was great, and Addison Cain did an awesome job of writing the era.
If you haven’t read book one of the series, get on that so you can read this one!
This was a sweet conclusion to a good story !
Matthew wants to show his love and devotion to the love of his live, and he does is his gruff adorable way.
I love so much black bird, she is a wonderful woman so strong, intelligent and vulnerable at the same time. For me she is the perfect blend.
This book left me with a smile in the face !!!
A Shot in the Dark is an absolutely wonderful read. A step away from Cain’s normally dark atmospheres, this prohibition-era romance is full of twisty turns to keep readers on their toes. Charlie, Matthew, and the other Emersons are phenomenal characters, who carry the story with a light-hearted banter not regularly found in Cain’s work.
Steamy, suspenseful, and sure to please A Shot in the Dark stands as a testament to Cain’s versatility as a writer and a fantastic ending to her A Trick of the Light duet.
A shot in the Dark
Our Charlie has left, Matthew is beside himself trying to track her down. Things get a little steamy as the love birds enjoy their mutual attraction in a night of passion. The cuddly parts made me ahhh aloud and occasionally squee with happiness, too cute. My favorite parts or this book were the times it made me giggle, chuckle, and laugh out loud. Will our couple live happily ever after? This is definatly on my reread pile and I will be recommending to all of my reader friends and acquaintances. Although it is mild compared to most of Addison Cain writings, it has quickly become one of my favorites.
This second part to A Trick of the Light is a work of art!
Welcome back to Monroe County and Charlie, Matthew, Nathaniel, Ruth, and Eli. Let’s add in trips to Chicago and some big time gangsters!
A man of few words but his actions speak volumes, Matthew will do whatever it takes to bring Charlie back home from the Windy City.
Charlie is a strong, dangerous, deadly, scarred young woman, innocent in some ways, darker in many more!.
Their lives are intertwined with prohibition, liquor running, criminals of all levels of society, deadly situations and avoiding the law.
But the electricity, desire and love building between them is a joy to read and witness even though it is fraught with dangers brought on by sacrifice and their own actions.
There are periods of intense danger, violence, deception, terror and death. On the flip side, there are moments of sacrifice, vulnerability, relationship building, growth, sensual sexy scenes and though I never thought that I would use these words regarding a work of Ms. Cain, moments of such sweetness and tenderness, it will make you misty-eyed!
There seems to be no limits to the talent and versatility of this author and her work! Loved, loved, loved it! 10 out of 5!
You must read A Taste of Shine before reading this one because it is this one picks up right where that one ends. I actually re-read Taste of Shine before I started this one, and I’m glad I did. It made the story richer and more enjoyable.
The story is set during the Age of Prohibition and it follows Charlie and Mathew as they figure out how to make their relationship work. I absolutely love Charlie. She isn’t a victim or a shrinking violet. She is fierce and strong. She is also a little bit reckless, even though she doesn’t see it. Mathew is patient to the point of sainthood but he is determined to do what he has to do to keep her safe. I love the danger in this one. It isn’t just the danger of the world they live in, it’s the danger that each of the characters thrive on. It’s in their souls and the thing that makes them alive.
The romance has all the darkness I love about Ms. Cain’s writing. It intense and not for the faint of heart. There is also a lot of deep emotion and heartache. I was swept away from beginning to end and loved every minute of it.
The characters and the plot kept me intrigued with this book. Matthew’s character stood out much more for me in the second part of this duet. He was still somewhat gruff but more expressive about his feelings for Charlotte. I will admit to smiling at some of the scenes where he was so protective of Charlotte even when she didn’t necessarily believe she needed him to be. Charlotte is a heroine that has easily became one of my favorites. No nonsense, extremely capable, and will come out swinging no matter what the adversity. There were some grim events that happened in this second book but this couple prevailed with a satisfying happy ending.
One of my favorite books/series/authors
