The conclusion to this duet was such a good read. Continuing from where the first book left off, Matthew is away to Chicago for the woman that he means to keep.
Charlotte always the headstrong, wild girl continues to keep him on his toes, but danger awaits this pair as trouble find Charlie when Matthew and his brothers are on a moonshine run. Not one to take anything sitting down,Charlie sets out on her own hunting and find.
Will this couple ever get to the alter because it seems someone doesn’t want Charlotte to get there. With danger, torture, death, love and a bit of moonshine, this book takes the reader on a well written road.
I said this with A Trick of Light and I feel it is worth repeating again
“This is why I enjoy Cain’s work – her varied writing style. Her extraordinary ability to easily transport the reader into another time and place is unmatched.”
I have been eagerly awaiting A Shot in the Dark and I was not disappointed
To truly get the full effect of the plot line and the necessary attachment to the characters (that is what makes a book a story) I suggest you read the first book A Trick of Light
Charlotte went back to Chicago – back to the man who raised her and the world that crafted her into the woman that she is today. Charlotte is torn between what she feels she “owes” her former mentor and what her heart wants. This is a tough place for any girl but for Charlotte, her decisions could have deadly repercussions.
Matthew is not letting her go and bless his grumpy cigar smoking, never speaking, always grunting arse for that! I truly love him <3
If you enjoy spunky, take no prisoners heroines and broody alphas then this is for you. The characters are fabulous each one is unique and brings a different aspect to the story and their personalities are so vibrant and in your face - I love the brothers' characters something fierce
The story itself is entertaining and pulls on all the right notes I enjoy experiencing as a reader- the little laughs, the raised eyebrow, the deep inhalation when I fear the moment and the warmth that comes when reading a love that stands against the darkest of foes
This is a whole different style of writing for Cain- but as we have come to expect from her, it is practically perfect
The Bounty Hunter and an awaited HEA
Not one to give away plots or the spoilers, I will mention depite the information of a dark past and even darker events we witness here there is a happy ending waiting for our happy couple.
This book held more action and inspiration for what a true heroine at any time era should be like, not only was she a strong woman but she found an even stronger hero to hold her thru all the torture our author punished us with, I’d like to also mention the family ties where also beautifully woven however my only question is what happend with her would be father the man who adopted the black bird, I feel a Novella needs to be requested so we may also find the happy ending for the eldest Emmerson.
Their story’s perfect ending
What a perfect ending to Charlie and Matthew’s story, with an HEA that was more than I could hope for, for these two. Matthew chases girl to Chicago, Matthew fights for girl, Matthew gets girl.
Add in some authentic and fabulous action, a mobster connection to keep happy, and a future to convince one special girl to share.
Amazing depths to the characters which I enjoyed being revealed in this second book. This series is to me more sweetly romantic, but no less thrilling! What Charlie ends up finding in the little town where her car breaks down in will pack an honest and heartwarming punch to your heart!
This is the second book in a duet. If you haven’t read the first one, go back and read it, then come get this one. It’s also an expanded version of a previous book.
Charlotte has left because Eli is a freaking idiot. Matthew isn’t all that happy about it, and he’s going to go find her and bring her home. So, off he goes to Chicago, trailing Nathaniel, because of course he is, to find his golden girl and show her how much he loves her.
This is a really story, which a lot of love and emotion happening. Part of what makes it good is the fact that Matthew mostly accepts Charlie for who and what she is, and he doesn’t make her feel ashamed of anything. He just loves her. Of course, there are a couple of things that he doesn’t like, but that’s just the way that it is.
Charlie is so strong. I like her so much. She’s had to deal with such a huge pile of crap for her entire life, so for her to come out of it as well as she has is just proof of how awesome she really is.
This story made me cry sometimes, but it also made me so happy.
I absolutely loved this story! I think even if you’re not a fan of historical fiction, you’d still like this! It really is more of a character driven story than just another historical fiction. It picked right up where the first book left off, and it was just impossible to put down.
We learned a little more about Charlie’s past in this book, and it’s just so sad what she went thru as a child! I loved seeing her and Matthew’s relationship develop, and I even got a kick out of Beaumont!
I enjoyed every single page of this book. While I love Addison’s darker books, this book was just heartwarming and left me smiling and feeling happy! Definitely 5 stars!
This is not the type of book I’ve become accustomed to reading from this author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this duet. What I got was a sweeter romantic story, with a strong heroine. Matthew and Charlie are a fun couple. Their chemistry is dynamic and somewhat unexpected. Please be sure to read the first book before reading this one. Otherwise, you will be confused.
This is a prohibition era romance like no other. Incredibly Witty and full of action and romance. Addison Cain keeps doing what she does best, creates empowering badass female characters that go outside the box and smash stereotypes.
The book guides you through the stubbornness of Matthew and Charlie’s determination and hard hardheadedness. This characters will make you like and scream at the page more times than not!
How can book 2 be better than book 1? No idea but this one seemed to capture me mind, body and soul. This book has some amazing depth with the personal growth done within the characters and packs the perfect amount of twists and turns to keep the reader actively turning pages. I loved the basis of the story line and how original of a read it was for me.
“It seemed a bit odd to dance with a man she’d chopped up bodies with in the past… and oddly sweet.”
This quote kind of sums up the theme of this duet and the second half was the perfect end to Matthew and Charlie’s story. I loved the evolution of their relationship with each other, Charlie’s relationship with Matthew’s family and the town and Matthew’s relationship with Charlie’s mod family in Chicago. It made it more believable that they had problems they needed to work through.
Another great read, Ms. Cain!
There not enough praise that I can give Addison Cain for the second installment of this duet. I love her dystopian fantasies with characters like Shepherd and Wren, but there is a sweetness to A Trick of Light that we don’t find anywhere else. Matthew and his golden girl are back! With the lot of the Emersons and the Chicago gangsters. Charlie and Matthew are finally living together and preparing for their happily ever after but there is no rest for the wicked. Read and see how this story end, nothing in it will dissapoint you.
This is the second book in the series and I do recommend reading them in order. Charlie is missing and Matthew plans on finding her. This story has plenty of drama and is off the charts hot. The characters are amazing and the story draws you in from beginning to end. I loved it!
Sweet and just right.
From beginning of the duet to the end, Matthew shoots straight to the heart to the well deserving counterpart to Charlotte. I could not ask for a better ending with that devastatingly perfect last sentence. For all of the author’s different flavors of writing, this one is for the endearing precious moments of self discovery and general kick butting all wrapped up in Prohibition Era of a quaint small town. It’s a slower pace of lifestyle for the female protagonist-one she has earned from her hard life. Great supporting cast of secondary characters, this remains one of my favorite series from the author.
Book two of A Trick of the Light duet picks up where book one left off. It stays true to the lighter tone of this series which shows a softer side to Addison Cain’s writing and is a true testament to her versatility as a writer. This book had me fall deeper in love with Charlie and Matthew. While there are twists and turns and an engaging plot, for me this was a relationship driven story done beautifully by the author. If you are a fan of Addison’s writing and looking for something less intense than her usual fare, definitely pick this up!
Addison Cain wraps up the story of Charlie and Matthew brilliantly in this latest book. While one of her tamer books, the story is beautifully written and as a reader you are sucked into their lives and you feel the emotions so vividly. Terrific job Addison Cain. Another great story!!!
This story is so incredible, it might just beat out the Iredesi collection. Absolutely incredible story writing, characters are heart warming and so well written that you don’t even know you’re reading until the last page. Addison Cain, you are a bard of the new ages.
Matthew and Charlie continue to navigate their relationship. Neither has a lot of experience and it shows. They both have a genuine love for one another that really is evident in every interaction.
Prohibition and Chicago are a great setting for the story of these two outsiders to general society. Charlie is trying to figure out how to be what she thinks he would want in a woman. She has others pushing their ideas on her. She is physically very strong but takes some emotional hits that really throw her.
This second part of the story has lots of twists and plots they have to face to find their happiness. You definitely need to read the books in order to really enjoy the story. You really get to see the characters change and their relationship become something neither expected.
I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.
A Shot in the Dark, the sequel to A Taste of Shine, is a Prohibition Era romance. The sequel reveals more of Charlie’s past and the things she’s had to endure. The violence of the era is more prevalent in the sequel though it’s still not as dark as other Addison Cain novels.
I love how capable and kick-ass Charlie is – in ways more skilled than Matthew – but she’s also still so kind, loving, and in other ways totally clueless. She feels so real and so does the love that you can see blossoming between her and Matthew.
This isn’t the normal kind of story you may have come to expect from this author. Usually it’s dark and dirty alphas galore. Come on who doesn’t love that..
In this story, you get to see the softer and lighter side from this author. Its an exceptional story. You can’t help but fall for these characters.
No one has made the speakeasy era more alive in a book. You will be licking your lips and wanting to sip apple moonshine right along with the bootleggers.
This story picks up right where A Trick of Light left off, so make sure you read that book first.
The Emerson men scorch up the pages and Charlie is a feisty spitfire who can hold her own.
This must read is filled with Chicago gangsters, good ole’ country boys, moonshine and tons of heart.
I really want more.. pretty please (I’m just a bit greedy).
Suspenseful & Steamy Historical Romance
A beautifully written conclusion to the first historical romance. This second edition continues with even more intrigue and suspense, unfolding Charlie and Matthew’s story even further to lead up to a wonderful conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend reading them in order to gain the most from the series. I voluntary reviewed a copy of this book.
