One of my favorite things about books is what they make me feel. This author took me into a time period that has always held intrigued me and made me feel as if I was a part of it. Through her words, she made this period vivid, vibrant, and realistic. Even though this is fiction, it just increased my appreciation of the prohibition era because of how she wrote it.
This author is one of my favorites for a reason. She is known for writing Dark and by dark I mean DARK. I often call her Satan in my head because I often curse her stories out even though I would not change a thing she writes. Quite the conundrum. #I LovetohateherbutIlovehertoo #Thestruggleisreal However, in this book her writing style is softer (a word that I never thought I would use when describing her) and shows that she has a heart and is not entirely Satan. I will likely rethink that in her next book that is “coming soon” because I know this softness won’t last long because she lives to torment her readers.
Regardless, It is a continuation of A Taste of Shine and picks up the story of Charlie, Matthew, Nathaniel, Ruth, and Eli. It is filled with anticipation, steam, and suspense. Yet, it is so much more than that, she stirs up emotions and made me feel for the characters. Even though this is softer than my black and jaded soul usually reads I still loved it. It reinforces that she is a master wordsmith and one of the best in the romance genre.
And off topic, but can I just say how aesthetically sublime this cover is? Truly captures the book perfectly.
so this is the second part of this duet: the re-release of an updated version of the original “A Trick of the light” that had been split into two separate parts.
This is a historical read set in the time of Prohibition, Gangsters and moonshine and I was ever so excited to be back in the fold of Monroe County alongside the Emerson Kin and Charlotte.
Before getting stuck in here I did a reread of the first instalment just to get the whole experience in full and it wasn’t long before I was right back in the moment: so vivid was the picture painted here.
It was almost like I had stepped back in time and was witnessing this story firsthand rather than as a spectator.
This story manages to grab you by your throat and pull you into it’s realistic and detailed landscape.
Matthew and Charlotte’s relationship really takes a step up here progressing in intensity as their connection evolves.
I could feel the emotion and heat here in spades despite Matthew’s habit of scowling and grunting and lack of talking except absolutely necessary: I actually found this a rather endearing quality of his: no idea why that was I just did.
So as I mentioned before this is one of the lighter offerings from this author but still this went darker than its predecessor in terms of story direction.
This is a fantastic and extremely unique read that I devoured in one sitting.
An excellent conclusion and a huge thumbs up from me.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of A Taste of Shine (A Trick of the Light, #1).
All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

Book 1 fooled me good, this took a dip into the darkness that Ms Cain is known for.
This is the second part of a duet, is definitely 18+ in content, and is an organised crime/romantic suspense set in the US prohibition era. I’ve really been looking forward to reading the conclusion of A Trick of the Light , so was overjoyed when this landed on my kindle. I don’t think I’ve read anything by this author that I haven’t liked, or more accurately loved.
In order to fully enjoy this book you need to read A Taste of Shine first. This story continues straight from where Taste left us, with Charlie missing, Eli in the doghouse and Matthew determined to track her down. Now I thought that perhaps this book would be all about Matthew winning Charlie back, but it was sooooo much more than that.
Whilst Book 1 was slow burn this was anything but, my word Miss Charlie, for such an innocent you sure did go all in! This is a steamy hot read with plenty of suspense and a dash of darkness thrown into the mix. Our heroine really goes through the ringer in this book, putting Matthew, Nathaniel, Ruth and Eli through it alongside her.
I pretty much read the book in one go, including reading late into the night to finish it. It’s very much one of those addictive stories that won’t let you put it down until every word has been devoured and etched onto your soul. It took me from laughter to total heartache and through swooning to getting hot under the collar and I loved every minute of it.
If your a fan of grittier reads, dark reads or Ms Cain then I really do recommend this book to you.
I absolutely adored everything about what Addison Cain did with A Shot in the Dark.
Torn between the glitzy life and the peaceful life, I really enjoyed getting to know Charlie better in this book and learning more about her past while being at the edge of my seat dealing with her present.
I found myself grinning ear to ear and eyes watering on more than one occasion.
This was definitely an ending to love for our Charlie and Matthew.
As gritty, raw love as sweet as Addison Cain gets
The sweet, sweet conclusion to the A Trick of the Light duology. I loved that this was a touch different from what she usually writes, with the gruff antihero male and rough-and-tumble leading lady finding their HEA in a whirlwind and the blessing of a notorious gangster. So I definitely recommend you give it a shot. Settle in, take a sip. Let the flavors of action, steamy romance, and dark grudges touch your tongue, and then let it burn all the way into your belly to keep you cozy warm after you’re done. You won’t be sorry.
Great follow up to book one! It’s so easy to fall in love with Matthew’s and Charlie’s growing relationship. Addison Cain does an amazing job of showing the story and pulling you in along for the ride. I cannot get enough of her books! Great job once again!!
This book has such a sweet couple! I fell in love with then in the first book and I just fell even harder for them in this one!
I loved seeing Matthew in Chicago. And also finding out that people do fear him and respect him is interesting. Especially when you see how he is with his Charlie. I also liked learning a bit more about Charlie and her past and her connections with the mob.
Great ending to this duet!
Thank you for your review.
I read this book as well as the first and I am truly amazed that Addison’s mind can dwell in so many worlds. It was a nice twist to the usual dark romance she writes and I truly enjoyed seeing this side of her writing.
this second book shows you Charlie’s dark side. how life is like when she becomes the blackbird we heard about from the first book. more action on this one but definitely has love and steam. her and matthew progress even further into their relationship pretty much at the beginning of this story and we see how things really are between her and her ‘family’ which was something not delved into from the first book. everything went full circle and again, what made me love this book SOO much was how the author made her to be. the oh so strong and confident Charlie yet the insecure and peaceful charlotte. I love the dynamics in her personality so much. beau and matthew were so freaking great as well. great ending!
A shot in th he dark is the final installment of the Twist of light duet. This prohibition-era story continues with Matthew and Charlie. It had some unexpected twists with even more drama. I’m convinced at this point A. Cain can write in any genre and the book turn out amazing. Her versatility as a writer leaves me in awe. This is a must read. I do suggest the books to be read in order to fully appreciate the value of the story.
A delightfully, entertaining throw back into the era of prohibition, bootleggers and mobsters.
Hard as nails, Matthew has met his perfect match in sassy, bada$$ Charlie.
I loved absolutely everything about these characters, and the take me away from it all storyline. I highly recommend you don’t miss this duet from uber talented Addison Cain <3
Just like in A Taste of Shine (Book one of the A Trick of Light series), A Shot in the Dark explores the intense give and take relationship that Charlotte (Charlie) has with Matthew. Even though they come from completely different worlds and occupations (big city Chicago, bounty hunter/back country West Virginia, bootlegging moonshiner), they actually compliment one another. Matthew is a man of few words and Charlie is a vibrant firecracker. She draws attention with her beautiful, assertive personality…growing on Matthew and frustrating the heck out of the poor man that in one scene he gives her a good spanking! Love both Charlie and Matthew and how perfect they are for for one another. Thank you Addison Cain for letting us experience their love (and sometimes violent adventures) during the prohibition era.
I concur with everyone who has stated that you must read the first book before getting into this one. But, trust me, that will be no hardship. These books are a detour from the regular fare that Addison Cain is known for. But that does not meant that it isn’t it’s own gritty, sexy, violent, historical, sensual, darkly pleasing tour de force that you won’t want to put down until it’s done
All of Addison’s work is flat out stunning. It can be painful at times in its intensity. But A Shot in the Dark is by far my favorite. It’s hard to describe. Beautiful. Mesmerizing. Loving. Gentle. Passionate. Persistent. Come for the Sunshine. Stay for the Dark. Must read.
A shot in the dark? Well, her aim is true; Addison Cain continues to surprise and delight with well-developed characters and robust fully-formed worlds that tell stories all on their own.
Charlie, may not be easily riled by the evils of the world or injustices suffered, she’s no stranger to that life. She is however, new to the onslaught of emotion brought forth by love. Just when she’s got a handle on things the wind changes, the tempest brews and wreaks havoc on her exotically plain, country life.
In the second book of the series, we learn a lot Charlie and why she is the way she is. In her, its easy to find a bit of yourself. Its not difficult to imagine having built walls to protect yourself; having fortified them to the point that you no longer knew how to get yourself out. Charlie might have her vulnerabilities locked away in the deepest part of her heart but Matthew Emerson is a bulldozer, wrecking ball, and dynamite all-in-one. He reads her better than she can read herself. A small nod, a pregnant pause, and she’s a book in his hands, pages printed in large, easily readable font.
This story is a welcome divergence from the Queen of Dark Romance, Addison Cain. She’s equally talented at writing HEA as she is destroying all hope for tomorrows. If you’re looking for a light-hearted, quick read with sexy characters, a well-paced storyline, and smile at the end, this is the read for you.
love is in the air!!! A shot in the dark is the second installment of the A trick of the light series and it is not your typical Addison Cain book. This book is sweet with a little bit of grit but you can’t help but to fall in love with Charlotte and Mathew in this moonshine tale. The book starts off in Chicago and guess what we get sex (not that that’s all we were after….) but we definitely get some southern steam! I feel that everyone came “into” themselves and learned to be fully accepting of themselves and or their partners.
Take a ride on this sweet and sensuous train I’ll take you back in time when things were just a little bit different, but the same.
Sn: This two book series was previously published as a trick of the light and it was one book.
This truly is a sweet and perfect end to this duet. Matthew and Charlotte are utterly perfect for each other. This is lighter fare than her truly dark series but it still hits hard. I do wonder if Cain would be willing to give a nice end for Emmerson but either way I think this book wraps up Matthew and Charlotte’s story perfectly.
Not many authors work with the prohibition era and Cain masterfully paints the scene for Charlotte and Mathew’s story. I am constantly amazed how Cain crafts her characters to fit the background and vice versa. It somehow makes all of her stories more poignant. I love everything she does and it constantly surprises me how she changes the settings and motivations of her characters to prevent her writing from going stale which can happen to some authors. Get this series. And if you haven’t read her other stuff get that too.
This was a sweet final installment to the Trick of the Light series. AC’s writing here is more my speed than some of the horror she writes, so perfect for me. We follow Matthew & Charlie in the 1920s, where their relationship grows in intensity & passion (the first book was more of a slow burn compared to this). I LOVE Matthew’s character b/c he’s so fiercely protective of Charlie/Charlotte, even tho she’s an independent woman of that time. And I LOVE our fierce & reckless Charlie! 🙂 She really had to get thru some twists to find their HEA, since someone is determined to kill off her happy ending. Hated to see it end tho…
This is definitely a happier book than Addison Cain usually writes. This is the second book in this series and you have to read the first book before you start this one. It picks up right where “A Taste of Shine” leaves off. Charlie is one of my favorite characters of Addison’s. Despite her hard past that would break most people, she comes out strong and is slowly learning to trust again. The setting of Prohibition Chicago and the amazing character development really make this a must read!
This is the second part of the Trick of the Light Duet, the first one really caught me unawares as its an historical type read which I don’t really do very often, but this duet has really captured my attention, I really loved this, so different and unique to what usually read, which made it all the more fascinating for me.
Addison is well renown for her dark reads, this duet is definitely on the lighter side, but you really get a vivid reading experience from this, almost like you are almost back in the Prohibition era yourself! This second part in the duet did take a darker path from the first with its storyline, the plot kept my attention absolutely riveted, I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting!!
Matthew and Charlotte’s relationship really steps up in this one. growing and evolving as their intensity and passion ignite. I love how strong Charlotte is, how she can fend for herself, defend and kill with no problem – only Matthew seems to be able to even remotely put her in her place, but she does submit to him. Matthew has a unique knack of only speaking when really necessary, his grunts and scowls say more than words can ever say, I loved this about his character! He is fiercely protective of Charlotte, only she can bring out the softer side in him, but he is determined to protect her even though she is more than capable of doing it herself. Learning to step back and let her man do his thing is easier said than done for Charlotte!
Lots of twists and turns in the plot that will keep you on your turns, also highly emotional at times, really gritty – I loved it, it was a great conclusion to this duet, one I highly recommend you read!!
