SOON TO BE A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES
Are you made fainthearted by death? Does fire unnerve you? Is a villain something that might crop up in future nightmares of yours? Are you thrilled by nefarious plots? Is cold porridge upsetting to you? Vicious threats? Hooks? Uncomfortable clothing?
It is likely that your answers will reveal A Series of Unfortunate Events to be ill-suited for your personal … for your personal use. A librarian, bookseller, or acquaintance should be able to suggest books more appropriate for your fragile temperament. But to the rarest of readers we say, “Proceed, but cautiously.”

I LOVEEEEEEEE This book
It is very cool when you read the whole series.
I’ll admit, I loved the first twelve books in the series. However, after completing the thirteenth and final book I was so upset that I had my Dad drive me to the library with all thirteen and I donated them so they would not darken my bookcase a moment longer than they had to.
I have been wanting to read this series for many years, and I finally picked it up off the shelf to read to my children.
In the opening, the author, who narrates the book, warns the reader that the story is not a happy one at all. And the author is right. This book is a sad story. I like that, because not all stories have a happy ending. I think that this is rather progressive in a childrens book- to not have a happy ending. Or beginning, or middle for that matter. It is more realistic and shows children a different side of things.
Another thing that I loved about this book is that is that the author describes the meaning of certain words or phrases. The book introduces these words and phrases to young readers, and thoroughly explains them in a way that a child would understand. It is like a vocabulary lesson, without a lesson. It is mixed in with the story so well that a child would never suspect that they were learning something. And I know for a fact that this is a technique that works, because my own son brought up one of the words in a conversation we had a week after I read this book to him.
I enjoyed the characters in the book. While they were experiencing horrible atrocities, they kept their chins up and trudged through the muck. It is quite inspirational, not only for children, but for adults also. The children are also very clever, which is nice to see.
I was surprised at some of the things that occurred in the book. I know this isn’t a happy tale, but some of the topics just seemed way too intense for a child to be reading. There is violence and the issue of underage marriage presented in the book. Whether this is too mature for the audience is up for debate.
Overall, this was a sad story told in a humorous way. My son enjoyed the story as much as I did. We will definitely be continuing the series to see what happens next!
What a great read!
I can totally see why this series is so huge and was made into a tv series on Netfix. It is epic!
It is one of those stories that doesn’t have a happy ending. It takes you where you don’t want to go, but brings you out again. All of this is in good fun though.
Some pretty brilliant writing is at play here. You are pulled so deep into the lives of these three children, hoping they are well taken care of in the end.
And now I want more!
It may be a while though, but I will definitely read on!
4.5/5
I read this whole series to my kids. It was a great bonding experience. This is a unique and sarcastic series. We loved it!
Both daughter & I like it
Wonderful book. Couldn’t wait to read the rest
This is a perfect book for whoever thinks that stories can’t all have happy endings
It is very interesting, and will keep you occupied for a long time.
I’ve wanted to read this series for quite some time. I’ve finally collected my own copy of each of the books of the series and decided it was high time to start reading them.
The author tells you several times throughout the story that you’re not going to like it. I’ve been told by others who’ve read the books that this was off-putting, but it didn’t bother me. I found it added to the charm. There are also several times where the author will stop narration to give a definition of what the word being used means in the sentence it was used. Again, I found this to be charming and part of the overall style of the book. The book is dark and dreary and might make you angry for what is happening to the children. It’s written in a style for younger readers, but adult readers will enjoy it just as much, if not more so because of the content.
