Very difficult to put down.
I just finished reading A Secret Deal with the Devilish Baron: A Historical Regency Romance Book by Lucy Langton . I totally enjoyed this regency variation of a classic Beauty and the Beast story. The story features Isabel and William. William has a fearsome reputation and is somewhat reclusive. Isabel has just lost her parents and is grief stricken. When Isabel’s brother loses their home to William in a gambling session, Isabel agrees to become a live-in care giver to William’s sick sister, Beatrice, in exchange for retaining their family home. Isabel comes to love Beatrice as a sister and love also blooms between William and Isabel. But will William’s troubled past keep them apart? This is a fast read and most enjoyable. There are a few spicy spots befitting the story line. I will be looking to read more from Lucy Langton!
William is the type of person that mommas tell you to avoid. Isabel is the type of lady that listens to those mommas. But with it comes go sibling love she will strike a deal to help him and the Barons sister. Then the time in his house will make it impossible to leave there. Add in a sickness and a twisted minded maid and you have a great story.
A well written story that held my interest from the start. William and Isabel’s story has drama, danger, poison, a villain, and romance. I wonder if Beatrice has a story, as I would like to see how she does after everything she has been through and does George get a story. I enjoyed reading and I recommend.
Talk about an emotional rollercoaster! Characters are great especially since your given a background in them. There was a few places that I had to reread to make sure I knew who was talking but otherwise a great read. To lose ones inheritance is awful, especially when it’s your own fault, but the things people do to try and get it back. You never know what’ll happen when emotions get involved. You’ve got matters of life and death !!
I received this as an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review!
The characters are great. The problem is not using words in their proper context, mixing up phrases from different eras. It is not horse riding it is horseback riding or riding my horse. If none of this bothers you, then enjoy the book. I really tried but I couldn’t continue reading it with the grammatical errors. I did like the premise, but I kept getting kicked out of this world.
I thought it was a good book.
This story was confusing in certain parts as it jumped storylines in 3 different places. I would not recommend.
Story flowed so well, couldn’t put the book down. Description of the characters and surrounding felt I was traveling along with them. Able to vision the details and felt the sadden.
The story was good. The dialogue was awkward. The story takes place in England but celebrating Thanksgiving was mentioned. One character summed up an action using the phrase, the whole ballgame,
I couldn’t read beyond Chapter 3; is English a second language for the author? I flinched on every page with sentences such as these:
“A tear fell off her eye and onto her cheeks.”
“. . . and there was a swell in her throat.”
“Sad and dejected, she ran to her room and cried herself to bed.”
“She looked herself up in the mirror.”
An unexpected romance from author Lucy Langton. I am not sure of the time period whether it is Victorian or Regency. It seemed from the story that the women had more freedom and independence. The story is a bitter sweet romance that brings together Miss Isabel Montgomery and Baron William Gregory out of dire circumstances. This story is very soothing and is moderately paced. The cast of characters are basically good kind people from different backgrounds. The villainess of the piece is a quiet, calculating, insipid, noxious, dangerous person willing to go through any lengths to achieve her ends. She had a sinister menacing aura around her and most of it was displayed towards Isabel. One of the innocent party’s health was put in jeopardy. The Baron had a younger sister, Beatrice who was stricken with an illness and for years confined to her room. Even though Beatrice was physically better, emotionally she was scared and never left her room. When Isabel first came to William for justice on behalf of herself and her brother, she realized that maybe all the rumors about the Baron was not true. Regardless, she did not stray for her intent. Her brother, George, out of his grief of losing both of their parents, turned to lowly vices and even lowlier company. He gambled his inheritance and home and lost to William. Isabel was there to get it back. William took all into consideration and offered her a deal. He would return all to George if she would temporarily live there with him and his sister. Her obligation would be to be a companion for Beatrice and perhaps help her overcome her fears. An interesting read. Not a lot of heavy drama nor were there any signification twists and turns. Even when the villainess’es past was revealed it was not that big of a shock. This truly is a simple story but it was enjoyable.
A Secret Deal with the Devilish Baron by Lucy Langton is a wonderful story. Enter into Regency England with all the wealth and privilege of the times. Add deception and unexpected plot twists and the reader is in for a fun story.
There were a few places where the use of modern terms seemed out of place to the story but it doesn’t take away from a great read.
This book is not one of my favorites. It had a lot of grammatical errors and the storyline was hard to stay interested in. I did like the characters except for Rachel. All in all a decent read.
