An absolutely wonderful book from a talented author that I enjoy more each time I read her works. This book will make you mad, sad, and happy before you get to the magical happily ever after. I know you will enjoy it!
The plot and characters are well developed. It is a heartfelt story filled with lots of twists and turns that held my interest throughout. It’s a story that’s well worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Thanks My free opinion.
I’m surprised that the author used a Christian man for the main character. I question a Christian man putting himself in that situation. The terror that this woman has been through and has yet to go through is terrible, but Liam puts himself out their for Frederica. His love is true, but it sets himself up for scandal. I thank God that Frederica’s brother is the one who sees reason through all this. The characters are lovable. I enjoyed the story and plot is well-written, but veers off near the end to be a true Regency romance.
Frederica is Alexander’s sister from Odd Mystery of the Cursed Duke, and has been drugged, tormented and abused by her husband, who is keeping her in such a state for her money. Beatrice is able to get through Frederica’s hazy, drug-induced mind. Frederica eventually recovers her memories, which makes her more afraid. She gets to the point where she wants to start venturing out of her brother’s estate, and meets old friends in town and Liam. Then she spots her husband in town and freaks out. Her friends and Liam try to help her, but her husband starts a tormenting regimen to completely ruin her reputation and that of her family. He considers her a possession and is sadistic enough to enjoy tormenting her. After kidnapping her, he intends to either kill her or put her in an asylum. There’s so many twists and turns in this book it will make your head spin.
Abby Ayles is one of my favorite authors. This is the seventeen book I have read from her. I have enjoyed all her books so far. I applaud Ms. Ayles for shining the light on the aftermath of years of cruel and abusive treatment to women. The nightmares, the insecurities, the fears and the reprisal of the horrors. I believe the intentions of this book were sincere. However, I feel it did not hit the mark. The pace was so slow I wanted to stop reading after just a third of the way through. Based on what I read about the lead female character, I would have believed she would have been more emotionally damaged than she was. Although her reactions to certain situations were realistic there was not enough evidence for that she had been abused as alluded. I am not saying that a little abuse is different than a lot of abuse. All abuse is negative and terrible and has no place in society. Plus, the romance in the story felt contrived. There was no great passion or desire between the lead characters. As a matter of fact, it seemed too civilized and somewhat detached. Like I said early the overall idea for the story was well meant but it definitely missed the mark. I believe that this is an anomaly for Ms. Ayles and I look forward to her next book.
