The best small town romance makes you feel like you’ve stumbled across a delightful secret you can explore forever – much like falling in love. Opening A Seal’s Oath felt this way for me – yet again, Cora Seton nails the feeling I was seeking when I decided to pick up her book and start this new-to-me series. But Cora always adds a twist, and there’s a big one in here: Boone loses his ranch if he can’t find a wife and get her pregnant within 6 months, but there’s another twist. Enter Riley, a reality tv show (yep! you have to read it to understand… and it’s a hoot!), and all the fun layers of entertainment that come with their second-chance (ish) romance. By the time I finished A Seal’s Oath, I had that sad feeling – there’s that word again! – because I didn’t want it to end. I cannot recommend this series enough!
Four men who grew up in Chance Creek, Montana worked on Riley’s Grandparents ranch and Riley became known as tag-along as they worked. Boone and Riley became good friends Boone taught her how to do lots of stuff on the ranch, and Riley named them the four horsemen of the apocalypse, they treated her like a little sister. But Riley was in love with Boone although she never said anything. When they had graduated from high school, Riley showed up at the dance dressed like a beautiful young woman, she approached Boone and asked him to dance with her. Boone’s girl of the evening came up behind Boone and laughed at Riley and everyone laughed….Riley held her head up and left broken hearted. Boone didn’t laugh but he didn’t stick up for Riley either, to his shame. (Because they were supposed to be friends) The boys joined the Navy became Seals….fought for our country…..brave men. The men found a financial backer to back them …as they build a sustainable community on the very ranch that was promised to Riley after her grandparents passed by her uncle who moved to Europe that he promised her that after his death the ranch would be hers. Her uncle even gave her a key so that she could go to the ranch anytime she wanted to until that day arrived, although that wouldn’t be anytime soon. That’s the Very Basic start to this story….Smile….I absolutely loved this. Really great characters wonderfully written plot it’s going to be a great series with HEA in each book.
I was given this arc and I voluntarily leave this review.
An intriguing suspenseful romantic story
Love Cora Seton books! That being said I am not as into the “sustainable living” ideal in this series, but the characters and stories are just as engaging and fun as in all her books.
07/16/2021 “A SEAL’s Oath” (nook) is a sweet romance with plenty of angst and heartache. Ms. Seton does not disappoint. She salutes the military with her main hero, Boone. I was enchanted that the heroine, Riley, has a love for the Regency period.
In addition, Ms. Seton explores the advantages of sustainability and how we can improve our lives.
Great part of ongoing story line. Loved the characters and concepts.
Not a fan of living like Jane Austen would have but did tie in with the way the Navy Seals wanted to live while saving the environment. If you like stories about people trying to live like Jane Austen would have…this is for you.
Cora Seton writes extremely entertaining and original books. This was one of my favorites. Highly recommend.
I’m looking forward to reading the entire series!
I actually got the combo of 1 and 2. Boone’s story and then Clay’s story. Both great stories. Eager to read on to book 3. …. and the whole series. An interesting concept of the Navy Seal’s seeing that it is greed over resources that is causing conflicts around the world and that creating a sustainable community with tiny houses … and people dedicated to minimal impact on ecology … is the solution…. but then reality tv hits. oh my … I did struggle with the concept that the original agreement could be upended and the rich guy didn’t have to keep agreements.
I had just finished the latest in this series when I realized that I’ve read all of these but haven’t reviewed them. So now I’m on a mission to re-read and review from book 1.
In this first book the stage is set. Boone Rudman and three of his friends have decided to build a sustainable community. One that is eco-friendly to show that you can live comfortably and save the planet. He had applied for a grant from the Fulsom Foundation and it was their impressive proposal that caught the attention of the Foundation’s director Martin Fulsom. Fulsom has the property they will need and the funds to achieve their goal.
Unfortunately he also has a few things he insists on, a reality type show, women involved, a wedding and pregnancies.
Riley’s has just lost her job and with it the possibility of adopting a child. Her friends aren’t happy with their jobs and one of them has been receiving threats. Riley’s been thinking a lot about her family home in Chance Creek, her Uncle Ross owns it now, but one day it would be hers. She was the only one who ever spends time their. Now she comes up with an idea, throw off the shackles of this modern world and make a vow to live as Regency women for six months. During that time they would pursue their dreams. For Riley it would be painting, for Nora write her novel, for Avery write her screen-play and Savannah resume piano. Little did they know things were about to take a radical turn.
Apparently Riley’s Uncle Ross sold the property and the deal Boone made with Fulsom made him the next owner if the conditions are met.
With Riley and Boone getting reacquainted there’s still much for Boone to accomplish. Riley in her way helps to open his eyes about some of the design.
We meet a couple who also like to stay in the same era and offer some fun things the women hadn’t considered. Things really get interesting when the other guys show up, each showing an interest in one of Riley’s friends.
Riley and her friends also start thinking of a plan to make money once all this everything with the reality show is over. A B&B and Wedding venue at the manor house becomes a viable idea with the request for a regency wedding by Savannah’s cousin.
Fulsom is another matter altogether, every time that man opens his mouth it’s something that makes this project even more of a challenge.
I love these characters, the premise is different and intriguing. The reality show part will no doubt cause issues, and also add more complications as this series continues.
I laughed a lot and shook my head as well. Riley and Boone are explosive in their attraction and really heat up the pages.
I am starting my re-read of book two, I hope to have these all done by the time the final book in the series publishes.
This is an absolutely adorable modern day, Regency romance! What a fun combination! Boone is a hard core ex-Navy SEAL planning to build a super modern, self sufficient, off-the-grid community while Riley is a sensitive artist determined to live like a Regency lady in her ancestors’ beautiful old period home. Can they ever figure out a way to overcome their differences?
Excellent read!
Loved it have read the whole series. Can’t wait to read the next one .
Great way to think outside the box!
This book is different as romance novels go … a dynamically refreshing change from the normal reunion of two people who have been on different career paths for a number of years.
But the best part of the book is how a number of people, from different walks of life, pair off to make a project is destined for doom turn into a project everyone is excited to complete.
Yes, they lived happily ever after — but that’s not the story — the final chapters are so wonderfully plotted out, the story line to challenging, the evolving of the project challenging people who are totally negative to see all the positives.
It’s a great read …. even the slow parts off entertainment, despite some need for a good copy editor to help the author with the final four or five chapters.
This one is worth the price of admission … so to speak!
I love it
I love all her books
Wow. Another great book. Loved the characters. At times seemed like far fetched book, but one must put that aside. Looking forward to read more from is author.
