Adam, a Southern gentleman, knew the call to arms was near when President Lincoln asked for one hundred thousand men to stop secession and rebellion in the South. He joined the Union Cavalry — but not before he married his best, and only, friend.Abby, an Irish immigrant that settled with her family in Virginia, was as Southern as you could get. When her husband announces that he had joined the … joined the Union cavalry, she couldn’t believe what she heard. She supported the decision of the one person that she loved more than the world itself.
As the war raged on, things weren’t always as they seemed. Abby’s sisters joined in the Southern cause, working to keep the way of life that the South had always had. Through grief, pain, and battles Abby keeps to the one place that she felt closest to her husband — the cottage that their families had given them.
A scene in time. An epic battle. And a tale of how love (through all of its forms) can transcend life and death.

This is the first book in The Wellesley/O’Brien Saga. We follow three sisters, Abby, McKenzie, and Taylor in an epic story. This beautifully written historical romance and woman fiction is breathtaking, and captivating, filled with loss, grief, twists, and love. Impossible to put it down. Marnye Young, Allyson Voller, and Taylor Meskimen did a fantastic job with the narration. Looking forward to listen to A Sea Between Them, the next book in the Saga.
A Scene in Time is an American Civil War historical fiction that focuses on three sisters, their experiences, their loves and how they are impacted by the Civil War. We have brothers fighting on both sides of war, a young couple just married and torn apart by the war, two lovers brought together through their shared experiences, and an unexpected pairing that is not destined to be. The book starts with Abby’s wedding to Adam, her childhood sweetheart who goes off to fight for the north shortly after their wedding.
The war plays a large part in this story. It brings couples together, it tears couples apart, it takes life out of the world and it brings life into the world. The focus is on the journey each of the O’Brien sisters takes through the war, and their paths and outcomes are very different. The different points of view are beautifully narrated by Marnye Young, Allyson Voller and Taylor Meskimen.
A Scene in Time
Wellesly/O’Brien Saga Book 1
By Jessica Clements
Narrated by Marnye Young, Allyson Voller, Taylor Meskimen
There is nothing better than becoming completely immersed in story. Jessica Clements pulls us into a historical time period with three sisters, each experiencing the Civil War from their own point of view. We get to live through each of their stories, from a husband at war, to a women disguised as a soldier. While each sister has her own story, Clements masterfully weaves the stories together and creates feeling of family, struggle and love. It has intense battles, severe injuries, all the struggles of war and finding true love and happiness. A well written story and leaves us wanting to hear what is coming next.
The narration is fantastic and truly enhances the story. Marnye Young, Allyson Voller and Taylor Meskimen each grab a hold of their sister and produce their own little bubble of the story. I love each having their own voice, and bringing their experiences alive with wonderful imagery and a narrative to keep us interested and engaged. The three fit together well complimenting the different points of view. It’s a fantastic listen!

This Civil War drama is not the typical type of story I usually read, but I am so happy that the book called to me. The story of Abigail, McKenzie and Taylor, three sisters whose lives were forever changed by the war, was so well told I felt joy, sadness and amazement at the strength of these wonderful women. I will definitely read more from Jessica! I read an ARC and this is my honest review.
Jessica Clements does a very good job of connecting a world of characters affected by the Civil War. She departs from the usual format that carries one hero or heroine, and instead, introduces her readers to several people that are all connected to each other by the war. Each story is interwoven, bridging the characters into a scene in time–and that scene is the war.
As an American, there is a soft spot in my heart for books that make the Civil War come alive through fictional characters. This is one such book. As is often depicted in these stories, part of the family is Union while another part supports the South. This brings a national event down to the personal level, which I love. There is so much going on here. What else can a bride do but support her husband, even when he wants to go off to war? We learned a lot about the women in this family, and I look forward to the next book telling us more about them.
I was gifted this book but this is my honest opinion.
This is my first time reading something by Ms. Clements and it was a very nice read. Historical romance is one of my favorite genres, so that is why I was initially drawn to the book. Ms. Clements did a really nice job with descriptions and providing such vivid details that take you right back to that time in that specific moment. The story was well-written with three separate views of the characters which made it a compelling read. A very powerful story that displayed a lot of emotion. I truly enjoyed this book and hope to read more by this author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The tale lives on in the diaries who lived.
This was a true tale of the Civil War a man who answered the call by Lincoln, a wife that supports him and a family that works for the south cause. This was a powerfully written piece the epilogue was outstanding, but then the whole book is too. I do not want to say much about the story because I truly feel it will take away from the emotions as a reader you will feel when reading. I have high praise and I recommend this work of art. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
A Scene in Time, Wellesley-O’Brien Saga Book 1 by Jessica A. Clements in a Civil War era story about three sisters during a time of strife. Each girl has her own story of life, love, and heartbreak, and they are beautifully threaded together. This is a historical romance, but it has strong paranormal indications.
If you like historical fiction or are a Civil War bluff, you will enjoy this book. The battle scenes are so well written you can almost smell the smoke.
I was thrilled with this quick-paced read, romantic Historical Fiction book, which is not my favorite genre. Vivid scenery, intense battles well written with realistic sounds and smells of smoke and gunpowder keeps you turning the page. The story of three sisters interwoven by the events of the Civil War and one battle in particular. Jessica Clements excels at weaving three separate views of the story from her strong female characters in to an unusual plot twist to bring their individual stories together in the book, A Scene in Time.
This book is great for anyone who loves romance with a lot of real world history thrown in. I highly recommend it.
