Taste this culinary cozy mystery series from USA Today Bestselling author Nancy Warren. Each book is a stand-alone mystery, though the stories are linked. They offer good, clean fun, and, naturally, recipes.

Poppy is back and it’s week 3 in the Great Witches Baking Show. She’s getting closer to finding out about her past. There’s a murder Poppy must solve with Gato her cat. I liked all the characters but I like Poppy the most, I would be so excited to be on that show. She’s relatable and witches are just great. This book is good, like all of Nancy Warren’s books are. Now it’s time to give in and watch more of the The Great British Baking Show. I highly recommend any of Nancy’s books, this series especially.
Poppy Wilkinson is starting her third week of competition on the wildly popular Great British Baking Show. Poppy is a great baker, but her main reason for competing on the Show is the search for her birth mother. The only clue she has is the handmade blanket that was wrapped around her when she was found abandoned on the doorstep of a bakery. The blanket looks exactly like a shawl in a portrait in Broomwold manor, the site of the Baking show.
Poppy and her friends are once again challenged to bake wonderful creations under great pressure. Unfortunately, Poppy has stumbled upon another dead body, so her focus is mostly on finding the murderer. Will Poppy be able to rise to the baking challenges and remain on the Show? Will she be able to find the murderer? Will her newly found witchy skills help her in any way?
This is a fun and entertaining series and would be perfect for those who love baking shows and cozy mysteries with a hint of the paranormal. I enjoy the inclusion of Gato, Poppy’s cat/familiar, and Sly, a resident Border Collie. I also enjoy Poppy’s interaction with her friend, Jerry, who is now a ghost in residence at the local pub. The characters are well-developed, the story moves at a fast pace and the book is well-written.
The narrator does a great job with her different voices/accents and her performance makes this an even better book. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
Lots of interesting characters and interactions in this latest of the series with the MC being distracted from her cooking contest by her desire to uncover more of her own family history as well as trying to understand how the past continues to impact those around her.
It was my pleasure to receive this ARC and give my honest review.
Poppy is back in A Rolling Scone and still learning more of her past. I love watching Poppy grow as a witch and sleuth along side as a baker in the Great Witches Baking Show. She maybe slipping down in the ranks but there is always a distraction of something to solve. Poppy does what she does best with a little help of magic and of course the ever pesky Gerry. I can’t wait to see what is in stored next for Poppy to bake and her next mystery to solve. I love this series.
Poppy’s back in the tent for round 3 of the baking competition, but she is so distracted with her search for family answers and what happened to a local that she just can’t concentrate. This just might be the end of the road for Poppy’s baking dreams! The characters are so realistic and loveable that you can’t wait for the next book and you won’t want to put these down. I have both read and listened to the first two and now read the the third and am thoroughly hooked on this series and the characters. It’s like visiting new friends each time that you can’t wait to see! The plot for each book is so well woven and interlayered with storylines from several characters to really round each book out and make it so much more satisfying. I seriously can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and in Poppy’s search for her family history.
A ROLLING SCONE is a standalone cozy mystery. Set in Somerset, England on the grounds of Broomewode Hall. The filming of the baking contest is on the grounds. Poppy was born and then left at the front door of a bakery with nothing in her crate but a knitted blanket. Poppy is sure that the way to finding her biological mother is in the Hall. She won a spot on the baking contest and hopes to be able to get into the home. While watching the upcoming season for the contest they briefly filmed some of the inside of the hall. She saw a portrait of a woman wearing a shawl of the same pattern as her blanket.
Entering the third week of filming things have been happening in the village and it seems Poppy is always right in the middle of things. This weekend is no different. While shopping in the gift shop the shopkeeper dies in Poppy’s arms. Her sudden death is shocking and again, Poppy is right in the middle of things. Eileen had information on her mother and they were becoming fast friends. Poppy is a water witch. She has a lot of powers that she hasn’t even discovered. She has discovered a new coven that she is a member of and some of her fellow witches are trying to help her as much as they are allowed. This is a great mystery. My favorite so far. Lots going on and lots of entertaining side characters.
This is not the murder mystery that nightmares are made of. This is a fun read with a good mystery. You will be surprised at the end. There is no happy ever after. The crime is solved and then next book we will have another murder and mystery to solve. It is a good read and any age can enjoy. There is no colorful language or sex scenes. I definitely recommend it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 5/18/2020
“To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body but the soul”
In this, the third of the series, Poppy Wilkinson is still in the running for “The Great British Baking Show”, and the book sits at the start of the new week of taping on the grounds of the home that Poppy may have connections to personally. She’s warned to beware by a note she receives and as she gathers her stuff to return to the set so she’s a bit nervous. She’s got the recipes for this week down but her focus is scattered.
Turns out the gift shop manager remembers the time when Poppy’s assumed birth mother worked at the House and Eileen invites her to visit so she can share pictures of the time. However, when Poppy gets there later in the day, the woman seems different, distracted. She dies at the shoppe the next day and of course, Poppy is in the middle of a third death in as many weeks, much to the consternation of the local police. Eileen may have had a long term heart issue but she should not have died that way.
Can Poppy find all the pieces to the puzzle? Who will be sent home this week? Do white chocolate and ginger pair well in a scone? Give this a read and find out! Recommended 4/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author. I voluntarily chose to read and review it]
This is the third book in the Great Witches Baking show series and it’s just as great as the first two. It’s the third baking contest and Poppy needs to bake up her best scone, then she gets a threatening note. I just love Poppy’s character. I loved the mystery, suspense, magic, and all the characters. A wonderful read and I can’t wait for the next book.
This is another delightful entry in this cozy mystery series. Poppy is such a wonderful character! She is unique and I just love her. The well written storyline offers up an entertaining and engaging blend of mystery, drama, suspense, magic, heart and glimmers of humor. So fun!! Can’t wait for book four.
I am posting a candid review of my own accord.
Poppy is off to the 3rd weekend of the baking contest. It looks like her hands will be full this weekend. First there’s the threatening note, then work on finding her mother, and of course there’s baking the winning scone. Enjoy the wonderful characters and great story. Who knew the judges were witches?
A Rolling Scone by Nancy Warren a tasty five-star read. This is number three in the Great Witches Baking show series, they are stand-alone as each novel focuses on a different episode of the show and a different mystery with an underlying current. Poor Poppy has her work cut out for her in more ways that one this episode, lets hope a Bundt Instrument brings a better taste to her week. I find Poppy to be a great character and I really like Gateau, she seems to have her wits about her and I suspect knows more than we do about what will happen in the future. This is a fun series and each mystery just adds a little something extra to the story, I love the whodunnit aspect, and its done well and in a manner that I cant see it until the last moment, and I am usually the worst at saying in the first few pages they did it without even knowing and it turns out true, so a massive plus from me.
3 stars – I liked it
Poppy returns for week three of the Great British Baking Contest and finds herself struggling to concentrate on her baking. But she does discover more of her history at Broomewode hall, meet new friends, and says goodbye to others.
This was another fun and easy to read paranormal mystery. Poppy struggles in this one with the baking contest but she makes strides in finding out her history. I enjoyed watching her struggle this week with the contest because if you have ever watched the GBBO you know that everyone has a bad week eventually, so it made sense that it was Poppy’s turn.
The mystery part of this book wasn’t very difficult and happened mostly towards the end of the story. It was a bit sad how the murder happened though. My only big issue with this series so far is that this is book three and Poppy has barely learned anything about witches or how to do magic. I did enjoy the continuation of Poppy’s story but I do hope we see more magic and a little bit more mystery in the next book.
A ROLLING SCONE by Nancy Warren
The Third Great Witches Baking Show Mystery
It’s week three at The Great British Baking Contest and everyone and his brother is giving Poppy Wilkinson their recipe for the perfect scone. But Poppy has more than baking on her mind. She’s finally making progress in finding more about her family when Eileen, from the gift shop, shows her some old photographs. But before she can learn more, the elderly woman dies. Although she was in her eighties and had heart issues, Poppy believes her death to be murder. Will she be able to solve the crime while investigating her link to Broomewode Hall all while baking well enough to remain in the competition?
As a huge fan of The Great British Bake Off I absolutely love this witchy tribute. I feel the anxiety from the bakers as well as their camaraderie and the delight in being given a behind the scenes look. And that just has to do with the contest portion of the book, there’s also Poppy’s ongoing search into her heritage, and the weekly mystery! Each aspect is handled deftly, with no one outweighing or outshining the others.
In this third Great Witches Baking Show Mystery we get more insight into Poppy’s background as she gains greater access into Broomewode Hall. I like how an old photo leads Poppy closer to discovering more about her mother and new friendships bring her closer to her truth. The murder itself was unique and surprising as its full story unfolded. I love Poppy’s ability to find clues and detect murder, but I hope she can get her head back in the game and bake better in the upcoming week.
A ROLLING SCONE is a delectable mystery with great characters, delicious food, and a dollop of murder.
Recipes included.
A Rolling Scone-4 1/2*Poppy is all over the place. I would be stressed out to the max if I had to juggle all the things she’s dealing with. The series is based on her finding her parents however readers get the opportunity to get a taste of not only that but also a cozy murder mystery and the baking competition. I tend to want Poppy to focus more on the baking but she’s has something for all to prefer her to focus on and is successful in pleasing us all. I read this one out of order but it is still insightful and entertaining.
This is the third book in the cozy mystery series The Great Witches Baking Show written by Nancy Warren. I have listened to the audiobooks in order which I have found to be the best way to read them. You will definitely want to read this book in the order of the series to get the back stories of the characters and the clues that are collected during each book.
I was very impressed with the narrator’s abilities to switch between different accents and dialects so easily. She did some amazing Irish, Scottish and regional English accents.
The story revolves around Poppi being back for the 3rd week of competition on the Great British Baking Show. I am starting to think that any time Poppi is around, someone in the story dies – she’s kind of jinxed like that. If you want more specifics, you’ll have to read (or listen to) the book yourself.
So cozy! I love this series.
Audiobook version: 5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration
Poppy Wilkinson is back for the third round of the British Baking competition. Everyone wants to give her tips on how to make scones, including the nice elderly lady who works at the gift shop. When this lovely lady dies suddenly, something bothers Poppy about her death. Was it a natural death? As Poppy tries to make scones and a showstopper good enough to stay in the competition, she investigates this new mystery.
This time I could not figure out the culprit at all, which is great. This mystery was out of the ordinary and compelling to me. I love Poppy and the rest of her friends, including the four-footed kind. We even get to know both judges a little better in this installment. We also get a few fascinating tidbits about her family origin mystery. This audiobook was wonderfully cozy while also being tense and unpredictable. There is a sad tone sometimes because characters were grieving the loss of the nice elderly lady.
The narration was superb as always. The narrator’s voice is like music to my ears with her beautiful tone and expert grasp at a variety of British and American accents. She perfectly brings forth the warmth and subtle humor of the book.
I requested and received a free audiocode from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
A Rolling Scone is the third paranormal cozy mystery in the The Great Witches Baking Show series. Poppy and her familiar Gateau are back in Somerset for the next round of the Bake off and she soon discovers that every person she talks too has the ‘perfect’ scone recipe and tells her about it in great detail. Unfortunately a death and Poppy’s determination to find her birth mother begin to affect her baking skills. This is a good read but as Poppy is supposed to be a witch I would like a little more magic and a little less of Poppy constantly banging on about the same things as in the previous books. A little background is great but it is getting repetitive and nothing has really changed since the first book. That is only my opinion and I did enjoy the book overall. I definitely recommend it to all cosy paranormal mystery fans.
A Rolling Scone by Nancy Warren
The Great Witches Baking Show Book Three
Poppy Wilkinson is back at Broomewode Village for her third week of the baking competition TV show. The first thing they’ll be baking is scones. Being in town a day early, Poppy soon finds that every person in the village has tips on how to make the best scones.
The baking contest isn’t her main reason for being here. Poppy is trying to find her birth mother. Her only clue was the blanket left in the apple box with her when she was just a baby. She happened to see the very design of that blanket on a portrait in Broomewode Hall during a previous baking show. She’s determined to get into that room and see that portrait.
Poppy, who recently found out she’s a witch, also has always been able to see ghosts. So Gerry, the first murder victim, is hanging around her…since he can’t seem to move on, and she’s the only person who can see him. Great cozy mystery series.

Another great installment to this series. I love the covers of this series so much. I love this who done it. It makes you gobble up the book to see who is behind it. Things are heating up in baking competition and who is after Poppy. I love Poppy and love each book in this series. She’s one intriguing character. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I LOVE this series!
This week Poppy is trying to make scones for the Great British Baking contest but she can’t seem to keep her focus. She received a warning message that she was in great danger. Was it from one of the other bakers or one of her coven sisters? She meets Eileen who knew the woman name Valerie who may be her biological mother but she dies of a heart attack. Or does she? One again Poppy is chasing clues and trying to get into the manor house to trace her family. This series is so much fun, I love the characters and the location!
I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
