Having read and enjoyed the previously published works in the Haven Manor series by Kristi Ann Hunter, I could not wait to delve into this new story. I was not disappointed. Hunter is a master storyteller in the regency era. She caught my attention from the first meeting of the main characters and held it fast all the way to the satisfying conclusion. Although, this book could be read as a stand-alone, I think the reader will miss out on certain key parts of the story if the first book is not read before this one.
Daphne is a lovely heroine. A favorite quote about her is “everything Daphne did, everything she had become was in relation to someone else.” Her past was marred by a bad decision and the ensuing consequences and Daphne could not quite forgive herself. She had lost herself in the process of “making up” for her past.
William is unlike the typical marquis. He did not like the actions of his father and is determined to be different from him. He comes to Haven Manor to basically get away from the things that would make him like his father and to enjoy some quiet. But he didn’t know about Daphne!
Hunter includes much of the thoughts of her two main characters in the novel which allows the reader insight into Daphne and William. Another great aspect of this book is Hunter’s ability to write a great scene with humor and seriousness. One can feel the confusion, the heartache, and the love just by reading Hunter’s words.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes. All opinions stated are my own.
I enjoy Kristi Ann Hunter’s books, I have since her debut novel. This most recent series has taken a bit of a more serious turn than her previous one, and added a bit more poignancy, too. But amid the questions of identity and forgiveness, a sweet love story involving two imperfect people plays out despite the forces that would keep them apart.
As with many novels dealing with the Regency time period, there is an honest exploration of class distinction and the very real societal strictures that governed the time—and the consequences of breaking those rules for whatever reason. But I liked how the characters realistically deal with the potential obstacles their choices will create, and find that what they are fighting for is worth the troubles they may face.
The truly stunning moments come when the characters start looking at each other as people rather than by rank, then begin to examine their own actions and motivations in their treatment of others. William’s character is exceptional at this, at comparing his own life to the true living he sees in others—and not only does he see it, he uses it to make positive changes.
Oddly enough, one of the things that struck me as I read seemingly came out of nowhere: it was how I instantly understood more about Daphne from knowing how she could relate to Moses’ disastrous decision to strike the rock rather than speak to it, how one wrong choice could completely alter the rest of your life and cause you to reexamine everything else in light of that moment. I don’t know that I had ever thought about how familiar Bible passages and characters could tell me about the people in front of me, but I will certainly be looking deeper now when someone says they can relate to a certain Biblical person.
The spiritual content is solid and deals extensively with forgiveness—of self and of those who have wronged us, as well as God’s forgiveness of our sin. Moving on with life and refusing to remain mired in poor choices is beautifully portrayed, especially when it causes us to focus on others and find meaning beyond our worst mistakes.
This is a good, if sometimes bittersweet story, of how the past shapes our lives, but doesn’t have to have the final say. I recommend it for mature teens and up.
I received a review copy of this book from the author and publisher but was under no obligation to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are both honest and my own.
I’ve been looking forward to reading A Return of Devotion by Kristi Ann Hunter since I finished the first book in the Haven Manor series, A Defense of Honor. I simply adore the author’s sense of humor and wit which she infuses into her stories. The setting in Regency England, the cast of memorable, vividly-drawn characters, and the creative, complex plot of this book drew me right in. Daphne and William’s story reminded me of a comedy of errors. William was plopped down into the situation at Haven Manor and was oblivious of what was going on. Daphne was trying to protect her identity and her position in the house. The stellar cast of secondary characters add to the chaos and confusion.
Although this can be read as a stand-alone book, it is best to get the back story in A Defense of Honor first. There is also a novella A Search for Refuge which is a prequel to the series. As usual, Hunter’s wit and humor shine in this book. There were a couple of places where I felt the story dragged a bit, but then the author would pick up the pace again. The only bad thing about reading a Kristi Ann Hunter book is that I’m so sad when it ends and I have to wait a while until the next one comes out! I’m looking forward to Jess’s story. 4 ½ stars rounded to 5.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
“Something wasn’t right here, but he wasn’t sure if it was the remoteness of the house or an indication of a bigger problem.”
Living in virtual obscurity, Daphne Blakemoor has had plenty of time to conjure, until her imagination runs head on into reality; the new owner of Haven Manor decides to reside at his lovely, slightly dilapidated country estate. How is she going to hide the fact that the manor has been under the supervision of two women and a handful of children or more importantly, how is she going to hide the carpenter’s apprentice? None of her daydreams had turned out like this.
William, Marquis of Chemsford, wonders if his housekeeper is inept or simply needs to be replaced. Her constant nervous chatter about meaningless topics leads him to believe that “Mrs. Brightmoor” is a little off kilter, except that the home is spotless and the cook is turning out delicious food. He thought coming to the country would afford him time to think about how he could become the kind of leader that his father never was, instead his head has been filled with curiosity about his housekeeper.
Beautifully written conversations fill this story; some quite comedic and others intensely heartbreaking, but the combination of the two expose the souls of two people who have desperately sought forgiveness for their past mistakes and determine to make a difference with their lives going forward; the question is, will it be apart or together?
Loved this book! It’s the second full novel in the Haven Manor series and is best read in order. Check out Kristi Ann Hunter’s website for all her books: http://www.kristiannhunter.com
If you enjoy stories of imperfect people who grow to love themselves, flaws and all, and believe they are deserving of love then you’ll enjoy this story! It was so uplifting to walk alongside Daphne as she decided to embrace her past poor choice and use her experience to help other pregnant women in a time when society could be extremely cruel to both women and the resulting children. The characters are developed gracefully and the contribution to society is a win for everyone involved!
I highly recommend this book and ALL of Kristi Ann Hunter’s books!
I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.
I KNEW I shouldn’t have started this book at 8 p.m on a work night!
Did I listen to myself?
No.
The consequence of this was staying up until 3 a.m, then having to be the perkiest zombie in the Subway industry! (Do not ask me how I made it through that shift)
Am I sorry?
No.
I know Kristi Ann Hunter will ALWAYS grab my eyeballs and my heart within the first few words, and this book did not disappoint! I was instantly swept back to Haven Manor and I disappeared into the story within minutes.
If you’ve read book 1 “Defense of Honor” then you know we technically got Daphne’s story then, however we got it from Kit’s perspective then. We finally got to see Daphne’s pain, Daphne’s scars in this book.
There were some very powerful scenes when she REALIZED she lost her self when Benedict was born. Though she was not my favorite character I really admire how she fought to find herself after she realized how lost she really was.
William. I liked him. Why?
Because he was arrogant. Weird I know, but hear me out!
In this time period aristocrats were supposed to have this mentality. He was a marquis and he KNEW it, and he knew how to use the power the title gave him. Yet he was a gentle and slightly unconventional aristocrat. He was very complex, and I liked him…
Both Daphne and William were very solitary individuals, but in different ways. And they had a chasm worth of differences between those reasons. They still balanced each other out super well.
Their love story was not what one normally sees, a normal happily ever after did not happen. They MADE their own, they made it work for their quirks because love overcomes all those little things.
The author did an amazing job crafting a hopeful story out of a hopeless situation.
This series is definitely deeper than her other one, but she still finds a way to bring humor, wit and unwavering love to her stories. Not only does she do a FABULOUS job writing romances, she always shows GOD’S love too!
I did enjoy this story, but I’m chomping at the bit to get Jess’ story. She’s a mystery and it should be a fun ride.
I rated this 4/5 stars.
*I received this from the author**All opinions are my own
A Return to Devotion is genuine, heartfelt and sprinkled with humor and grace. The personality of Haven Manor itself leaps from the pages, inviting readers to reminisce even as it conforms to its new purpose. William’s inner dialogue as he attempts to sort out the unusual clues and occurrences surrounding him at Haven Manor (as well as Daphne’s often frantic or dramatic inner musings) cleverly fills the natural void between the two introverts.
Fans of Regency romance won’t want to miss a single moment of Kristi Ann Hunter’s original storytelling. She skillfully laces drama, humor, and faith throughout each book and I highly recommend the Haven Manor series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I absolutely loved this book! Kristi Ann Hunter made me laugh and want to cry! My heart broke for Daphne and Benedict! I love how she can pull on your heartstrings and then make you laugh at the characters antics. I have loved this series and can’t wait for the next book! This book is destined for my keeper shelf.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
“A Return of Devotion” is a delicious read, perfect to cozy up with for a day at home as snow falls!
I honestly don’t remember anything about the first book in the series (story of my life), but this does a great job at filling in the blanks. So, whether you’ve read Book 1 or not, or forgotten details, you can easily pick up Book 2 and be good (with the natural caveat that it would have spoilers for the first one).
Daphne is an endearing character, aggravating at times (but only because I wanted her to see her own worth faster than she did!) and incredibly personable. How slow am I to realize truths about myself and my identity in Christ, too? I constantly have to learn and relearn, as does Daphne.
And William? Talk about a swoon-worthy hero! I’d like one of him in real life, please. Honorable, noble, and a perfect combination of Darcy and Bingley (the book is set in Regency England, after all!).
The references to Bath and London are very Austen-esque, and the setting/world-building Hunter does is just what I’d expect after reading her other books—thorough and vivid.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Readers met Daphne, and learned some of her story, in the first Haven Manor books, but there’s a good amount to be uncovered and unpacked.
William, the Marquis of Chemsford, doesn’t his new housekeeper. For one, her actions are questionable at best. And she leaves him with more questions than answers regarding his newly inherited estate.
Daphne’s idyllic life at Haven Manor is over upon he arrival of the new owner—one who has the potential to unearth ever secrets she’s guarded closely. But there’s something different about this man.
The women who call Haven Manor home have a mission and purpose they defend with everything in them, and it’s something to behold when partners come alongside them to not only encourage them in their missions but to expand on them.
Kristi Ann Hunter again delivers a story with moments that made me smile and laugh balanced well with the other end of the emotional scale. I applaud Hunter’s take on the ladies and children of society that most of the ton preferred to ignore.
Now, when do we get Jess’s story? Because I’m ready for this confident and intelligent woman to meet someone who is her match. I imagine it’s going to be a ton of fun!

Kristi Ann Hunter is tops when it comes to Regency romance. I’ve read all of her books and have never been disappointed. This is a continuation of the story of two friends, bonded together through a rough time who found God’s purpose in their lives. In this one, it’s Daphne’s turn for love. William (my favorite character in this book. Well, besides Jess.) Comes into the picture as an unexpected tie to her past. Can they get past her fears to find a future together? I suggest you read it to find out!
A Return to Devotion fits right in with the rest of this series. I loved it. Now to move on to the next story. The one I’ve been waiting to read since the very first book I ever read from this author. Can’t wait!
This book was provided to me by the publisher, but as always my opinions are my own.
Regency is my favorite genre to read. I like the intertwining of the culture with mystery and romance and manners. When the setting is an out-of-the-way manor house used to house illegitimate children of the upper crust, my interest is piqued. These things happened. A lot. This is not a subject that is delved into in any of the books I had previously read until this series from Hunter. While it may sound slightly uncomfortable, the matter is dealt with compassion and sensitivity.
William, Lord Chemsford, was a delight to read. When he meets Daphne, whom we met in book one, A Defense of Honor, his thoughts made me chuckle more than once. She comes off as slightly dimwitted (okay maybe a lot dimwitted) and says and does strange things to keep him occupied and away from certain areas of the house. Of course, he begins to become suspicious as to why and then the game is on. His character is sort of gruff but then his true gentlemanly nature comes out and oh my. He is something!
There are sections of the book that seemed to drag with too much info but then I am a dialogue driven reader. Truly, the banter was such fun to read I would have liked more of that. It’s an entertaining and moving story though and one I highly encourage fans of Regency to read. I look forward to the third book coming out this fall. That will feature Jess and if you’ve read either of these books, you know she is a spitfire!
I was provided an electronic copy of the book through Netgalley and the publisher. No review required. No compensation received.
Before I begin my review, I suggest reading book number one so the reader will know about the characters and their place in this book. You will have a greater understanding of how Haven Manor came to be………
Daphne, the main character is people shy and has always looked on the bright side. She is a single mother but cannot let her son know that he belongs to her. She has turned to God and asked for repentance and does her best for the children of Haven Manor. She is content with her helper and the children until the owner of the manor, William, Marquis of Chemsford decides to take up residence. She and all the inhabitants are misplaced to a cottage on the grounds. William is totally confused and at times angry with his “housekeeper” as Daphne tries to keep him from learning the truth about the house. Why is the staff so young and why does she act like the manor is hers when she is just the housekeeper? When he meets her son, some of his questions are answered. This book is well-written, sometimes humorous, romantic, full of lots of twists and turns. It keeps you turning the pages and wondering how Daphne was going to keep everything together. How will the Marquis react when he finds the truth about Haven Manor and it’s inhabitants? All of this made for a remarkably interesting read………..
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Veteran writer Kristi Ann Hunter’s new release doesn’t disappoint. I was honoured to be a part of her Launch Team and read A Return of Devotion early. She didn’t disappoint with the new story line for our character from her first book in this new series , Haven Manor. I was drawn in by the story of Daphne and the new Lord of the Manor,William. As they meet, dance around each other and finally see who they both are together I was drawn into life in the 1800’s. There is a soulmate for everyone and William and Daphne find each other as they navigate the difficult task of bad choices and the results that come from them. You will not want to put down the book until you read the last page. Well done Kristi Ann and I look forward to the next book in this series.
A Return of Devotion is the second book in the series and I recommend reading them in order. That way you’ll enjoy it more and get the full picture. It took me a quick minute to get into it, but once I did, it was really good. I loved the characters and I felt for the heroine. She had so many issues and yet was still so loveable. The hero was quite patient and in awe of his quiet and quirky housekeeper. It was a moving story and had moments of humor as well. I loved the ending. That’s why I give it 4.5 stars.
My heart is soaring! I loved this book so much, I don’t know how to describe it.
We first met Daphne in A Defense of Honor. This book is her story. It’s a story of change, truth, forgiveness, and love. “There is life after forgiveness.” is a quote from the book. It takes some time for Daphne to realize this. But when she does, she is stronger than she ever knew possible.
I love Daphne’s imagination, her rambling thoughts, and the way she thinks of multiple scenarios in answer to a question.
The way the author puts the main characters together on the page is wonderful. It felt as if I was watching a movie. I loved the unique way William, Lord Chemsford, meets Daphne. His world is never quite the same afterward. I loved how William wanted to be a better man than his father, how he worked hard to be completely different from his uncaring, mean, selfish father.
I loved the way William cared for Daphne, truly cared for her.
I highly, highly recommend this book! It is a FANTASTIC story.
In this book, Kristin Ann Hunter has given us the very sweet and unusual regency character of Daphne. Daphne is a jewel. She’s fiercely loyal, loving, and quite protective of those in her care. She’s very shy and has a hard time with the social niceties of the day; and views herself as the ultimate wallflower at any gathering. She’s a dreamer and uses her daydreams to soften the sometimes harsh realities of her life. She’s made a good life for herself and the illegitimate children who have been left in her care. When Daphne’s world is turned upside down by the return of the owner of the run-down manor house where she and the children reside, Daphne must find a way to continue to care for those she loves as well as protect her own heart. When William first meets her, he wonders if she’s going to be able to learn to function as his housekeeper. The charm of this story is in the way Daphne lovingly fumbles her way from one situation to the other, yet makes a profound difference in the lives of all of those around her. William finds that he can’t help but love her, but will Daphne find the courage to accept his love?
This is a completely charming, yet different, regency story. Daphne made me laugh, sigh, and smile. There’s a whole supporting cast of wonderful characters that make this storyline complete. This is clean, sweet regency and it’s a book that I’ll read again. It would be helpful to have read the first book in this series before reading this one, but it’s easy to quickly catch up with all the characters and the things that have gone on before. I love Kristi Ann Hunter’s books, and this one gave me a reason to look forward to her next one.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
A Return of Devotion is the second book in the Haven Manor series by Krisit Ann Hunter. It follows Daphone Blakemoor and swoon worthy hero William, Marquis of Chemsford. Our heroine,Daphne, had a baby as a single mom and had gone into hiding. William, our hero, is trying desperately not to be like his father and move forward. Both characters are trying to forget their past and to make a new and better life. But, running into each other has made that complicated, and that is where this story begins.
I loved the story of Daphne and William and was drawn in from the first page after opening the stunning cover. This is a delightful read, and is regency writing at its best. The story includes a grand house, beautiful grounds, superb characters,a wonderful plot, sweet children, humor, an endearing heroine, and a hero you will fall in love with. Plus, moments to reflect on your relationship with God or wonder more about His role in your life.
To me what was also so impressive about this story was how Kristi Hunter was able to weave in all the different characters that were involved in such a complicated story, and the story flowed flawlessly. I could not put this book down, and highly recommend A Return of Devotion.
I was given this book by the publisher and not required to write a favorable review.
