This reviewer says it best: As in Houston’s previous books, this yarn has all of the elements, a murder mystery, a bit of romance, and my favorite, the wonderful interactions Jake has with his animals, Fred, his golden retriever, and a new found kitten who tries to steal the show. Houston is able to tell his story without gratuitous violence or sex. Richard Houston is a two-time USA Today Best … two-time USA Today Best selling author whose amateur sleuth solves murder mysteries in Colorado and the Missouri Ozarks with his Golden Retriever and widowed, sixty-nine year old neighbor.

Well written engaging mystery with lots of interesting characters, the ones you love and the ones you love to despise. Jake and most of his friends live in Colorado, but he is asked to go to Missouri to find out about a probable robbery of the grave of a Civil War ancestor. Let the body count begin! It’s a good thing that the local sheriff knows and likes Jake and his brilliant Golden Retriever Fred from a previous case or things could get even messier. This is the first that I’ve read of this series, but that didn’t reduce my enjoyment in any way except that now I have to hunt down the others for personal enjoyment.
I need audio, and Tom Taverna is great for this narration!
I requested and received a free audio copy courtesy of AudioBookBOOM.
I enjoyed the way the author came up with the thefts. It was a good read. Liked the way it kept entwining the characters relationship to each other.
Very entertaining quick read.
This is the secod book with these characters. The dog is the best of all!
Love anything with dogs
Very entertaining. Love his book series.
I always look forward to Richard Huston’s stories that include Fred the dog. Keep ‘re coming!!!!
Another great adventure with Jake and Fred!
Another of Fred’s (he is the dog) wonderful exciting adventures. Characters are very realistic and enjoyable in their human foibles.
Enjoyed this book, I have read all in the series. The golden retriever adds interest.
A great read
I love all of Richard Houston’s books. You feel like you know the characters personally and like them!
It was OK, but a pretty simple story. A little too much dialog from the dog.
Love Fred and his owner. I have read all of this authors books. They get better every time. Can’t wait to read the next one!
Enjoyed this book. The ending was quite a surprise and enjoyed the dog
Bonnie discovers someone is selling old family relics online. She and her friend, Jake go back to her old hometown to find out how to stop them. Jake and his Golden Retriever, Fred go at night to the family cemetery to see if someone has tampered with family graves. While there he gets shot at and discovers a body. This is a fun mystery that will keep you guessing and told without profanity.
Was very good book in joyed it much.
Fun mystery– Love dog stories.
I love laid-back, unpretentious Jake. He is an easy to like character who holds you to the story. His interactions with Fred and others seem real. And Fred is delightful. Makes me want to be a dog owner again. As with Houston’s other books I found this one an easy and entertaining book to read.
Okay, but not great. Liked the dog better than the owner.
