Bushwick Brooklyn in the 1970s is a cesspool of drugs, violence, and depravity. Every aspect of life in the blighted neighborhood has been contaminated by the Mafia. Butchie Bucciogrosso is an Italian cop who detests the Mob. A survivor of the streets, he returns from Vietnam only to find Bushwick in ruin. His partner, Fast Eddie Curran, had to kill his way out of Belfast. They are the only cops … cops with the courage to take on the Mob, becoming a deadly nuisance trying to win back their streets. Only the Mafia, their own dirty Department, and a corrupt federal justice system stand in their way. With themselves and their loved ones squarely in the crosshairs, can they destroy the Mob’s criminal empire before they are killed? Can they outwit a crooked Department of Justice before they are framed and imprisoned? The clock is ticking with Bushwick’s survival in the balance. A reckoning in Brooklyn is the new historical crime thriller from Detective Michael O’Keefe, the author of the breakout novel, Shot to Pieces.

This was a thrilling story. I had no idea the NYPD had to do and how they did it. This is told by a police office who was there and lived it. I liked the way he wrote. I had no idea what was going on at this time. It was action packed. I thought this was a really great book. I love the subject matter and he wrote this well. It was a great book and I am glad I read it. I am going to find other books by Michael O’Keefe.

A fantastic book one that is a historical fiction in Brooklyn that follows Butchie from his own neighborhood from the 1950s through the 1970s fighting in Vietnam, his family, and the local crime family. His partner on the force is Eddie Curran from Belfast. The author will take you on a journey through each one of their life’s up to their meeting. Then you are still in for a treat as they are on a mission to take down the local crime boss.
Once you begin this book you will not want to put it down for the author has made these characters jump off the pages and become ingrained into your mind as you are reading. It is like I was listening to one of my older uncles from New York telling me stories from the back then when he was alive and drove his black Cadillac in the Bronx and no one touched it.
You follow both Butchie and Eddie from their childhood to their marriage beginning their time with the force and then working together. Over time they become in touch with a task force that wants to take down the mafia as well. The problem is that they are being funded by congress, who has a congressman being paid by the mafia. Now Butchie and Eddie must take them down protect their families and cover their own asses. The way this story works and keeps going from one page to the next is great and also, I like the way Butchie picks up men and uses them to get into a door. Overall this book and all of the characters are fantastic and I cannot say enough good things about it. Most definitely a book worth reading. He might have thought the war was over when he returned from Vietnam.
Not only did he face the ghosts of his war, he faced the effects of the absence of good men in the neighborhood. So many died, in body and soul. The soul of their neighborhood bore the grief, the loss, and the marks of the greed that reigned in their absence.
A pain and blood filled battle with darkened shadowing even the pockets of light.
