You’ve met Jack from “A Reason To Breathe” now meet his cousin and lumberjack Max, Max Hunter or as Mia likes to call him Thor, God of Thunder
You know what they say about lust at first sight . . . It’s a seven deadly sin, but when you sin–you sin hard.
Max Hunter has a problem, …
Max Hunter has a problem, well, two, actually. One he fished out of the river and the other . . . A killer.
Mia Roberts has a problem that stands six foot five and swings an axe like a God. On assignment to study the grizzlies of the Alaskan frontier, she stumbles across a body and then stumbles into the arms of a lumberjack she can’t resist.
Throw in Max’s mother into the mix and a handful of crazy friends and family and you have a recipe for adventure.

Floved these two so much, Mia is freaking adorable in the cutest nerdy way possible, all her Carebare & bear t-shirts…I can’t even. She is there with a team documenting the grizzly bears. When she sees Max aka flanneled God of Thunder, she is pretty smitten. He is too, even though she is vertically challenged. Her boss flies in, starts a bit of a ruckus…then ends up dead…que the scary music. Unfortunately he’s not the last of the bodies that turn up. I was on pins and needles all the way up until 92% of the book to find out who for sure was the culprit…loved the suspense. CP Smith writes some of the best suspense, and I can never get enough. Just one more page, just one more chapter…so at this point I’m not getting much sleep, #WorthIt.
This was a safe read. There was an ex that didn’t want to let Max go, it happens with the Thunder God. Mia was a quirky, vertically challenged sweetheart, and I loved all her versions of Max, Wet Max, Naked Max, Sweaty Max, Clean-Shaven Max and so on. Honestly I have no idea how these two did anything outside of the bedroom, their chemistry was just like that. She does leave for a hot second, but he goes to get her. You really can’t escape the flannel wearing God of Thunder. Loved all the secondary characters, especially his mom Maxine. Loved her character so much, talk about a handful. Oh, and her aunt too, these 3 and their shenanigans, poor Max. We also get to see his cousin Jack and Jenn from book 1. Gotta love all the caveman when they’re together. Adorable epilogue and a relationship goals hea. Onto the next book, and I can’t wait.
#BookCrackSeries
Well, I can say this one was slightly better than the first in this series.
In the first one, I thought the heroine literally gave new meaning to TSTL and the hero was written so alpha he was almost controlling more than he was alpha.
With this one the characters were slightly better. Mia is a zoologist sent out on her first in the field assignment to Alaska to gather information about bears her employer is studying. However, being behind a desk is more comfortable and safer for Mia since she a bit on the clumsy side. Max is a lumberjack who is content with sampling what the local women have to offer rather than settle down. However, the minute he sees Mia he finds himself thinking of a future with a woman, but he’s just got to convince her he’s worth taking a chance on…oh and maybe protect her from hurting herself with her clusmy-ness, his mother’s outrageous ideas, a cop with a hard-on to pin murder on Mia, and a murderer.
Now while this one was better than the first in the series, I still couldn’t bring myself to give it more than 3 stars.
I was annoyed with how the hero handled the business with h is ‘friends-with-benefits’/ex after he broke up with her to be with Mia. You already know she’s on the fence with your relationship, yet all the ex has to do is cry and your hugging her, get drunk and instead of having your mother take her home or even explain to your woman what you’re doing you leave without a backwards glance and no phone call hours later.
When it comes to the killings…I understood why the first victim was killed, but we never got an explanation as to why the second victim was killed.
Romantic suspense is not my genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved Max; I loved that Mia wasn’t a pushover with him. This book had dashes of comedy mixed throughout. My only complaint is that some parts went a little too slow for me, but I think that’s part of it being a suspense. I would recommend this book and would also read more from this author.
This is the first book I read by CP Smith – and it won’t be my last!!! I loved everything about this book: from the alpha male-ness in Max, to the girly sassy-ness and strength in Mia, and the amount of drama and tension was the perfect amount – just enough to make the story enjoyable! Max and Mia have earned a place on my favorites book shelf and I look forward to getting to know more of CP’s characters (especially Jack from book 1) soon!!
I so want a kick ass mother/mother-in-law like Maxine, or better yet, I want to be her when I grow up, lol. CP Smith has done it again, another supreme suspense story with an dose of wicked humor. Once I picked up Max and Mia’s book, I had a hard time putting it down. Max is all alpha male and blindsided by Mia at first sight, and Mia is a klutzy, pencil pusher who was thrown into an an outdoor adventure. Max is god-like and can have his choice of women, while Mia hasn’t had any luck with men. When opposites attract, all hell breaks loose in the small Alaska town of Trail’s End.
Trail’s End is a logging town full of fun characters, and while Max and Mia’s journey is the focal point, Maxine and her cronies often steal the show. Poor Max, her son, not only is the woman he’s attracted to always getting her butt into predicaments, but his mother meddles in his love life, investigates murders, sells sex toys, and hosts monthly toy parties. The poor man has his hands more than full.
Mia is a consumate klutz, walking upright for any length of time is a challenge. Pushed out of her office and into the field to research grizzlies, Mia is out of her element, in so many ways. However, when she meets Max, she shows just how strong she is, despite her klutzy ways. When he is bossy and overprotective, she pushes back, with often hilarious results and great sexy banter. Though she thinks bugs and bears are her biggest threat, when she finds the body of her ex, little does she know she is in the crosshairs of a murderer.
Ms. Smith depicts life in a small town in with humor, accuracy, and suspense. Nothing goes on in a small town that everyone doesn’t know about in record time. Her cast of characters is varied: hot alpha men, grizzled old-timers, sexy women, hilarious meddling seniors, bears both sweet and not, and a nasty sheriff. I loved the setting, the characters, the plot, and the humor. This is more than a romantic suspense book, it’s a delightful fun read that the reader will find hard to put down.
