BOOK THREE IN THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES“Thrilling and hard to put down, readers will absolutely devour Tahir’s latest.” –BuzzFeedAn Entertainment Weekly Summer Reads pick!“The perfect summer read.” –The Washington PostThe highly anticipated third book in #1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir’s EMBER QUARTET.Beyond the Martial Empire and within it, the threat of war looms … QUARTET.
Beyond the Martial Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.
Helene Aquilla, the Blood Shrike, is desperate to protect her sister’s life and the lives of everyone in the Empire. But she knows that danger lurks on all sides: Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable and violent, while Keris Veturia, the ruthless Commandant, capitalizes on the Emperor’s volatility to grow her own power–regardless of the carnage she leaves in her path.
Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But in the hunt to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would help her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.
And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that demands his complete surrender–even if that means abandoning the woman he loves.

A Reaper at the Gates is the third book in my favorite, new series. The story is spun in a way that keeps me flipping the pages as fast as possible. The characters are exquisitely crafted and make this series completely binge-worthy. It just keeps getting better! Love it!
This series just keeps getting better. I loved seeing how Helene’s story moved forward, and the twist toward the end really took me by surprise. I know, as an author, I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t. If you haven’t picked up this series, do yourself a favor and sit down and read all three.
Wow that ending the whole book actually! There were things revealed that were just woah! I need to know all the things. So many different things are going on with everyone. I will be continuing this series!
Book 165 towards my goal of 290! 4/5 stars for this Middle Eastern fantasy! Okay, I can’t give too much away here since it’s the 3rd in the series….. but…..I am not okay! Sabaa out here breaking hearts. This book is HEAVY. I don’t know how to even feel going into book 4! If you start this series, buckle up buttercup. It’s a bumpy ride! But SO WORTH IT!
This is how I want to write one day. The dire circumstances full of darkness but with a ray of hope shining somewhere within. The multiple points-of-view that weave together three tales that at times are so separate you wonder how it will all come together. And the moment it does come together in a beautiful, terrible storm. I’m torn between pausing in my reading to savor this book, and immediately diving into the fourth and final book. I enjoyed the first two books in this series as well (An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against the Night ), but this one is definitely my favorite thus far!
The previous books have been violent, but the violence in this one is easier to accept because there is a war going on. The author’s descriptions are very vivid. The characters have grown up over the course of the 3 books, but they are still teenagers and act like it sometimes.
There are a few surprises, one really big one, and a few rather sad turn of events. The deaths in this one are not as devastating as they have been in the other books. Many of your main characters make it through (not saying who :-))
cant wait for next book
The third book in Sabaa Tahir’s fantastic series did not disappoint!
I LOVE this series. It only gets better. I’ll admit to some frustration that I started it knowing that it was not all available yet, and that was only compounded when I finished this one, but I’d still recommend you pick it up as soon as you have some time to get into this world. Magic, mystery, intrigue and scheming. Love and betrayal and healing. It’s all here. Figuring out who you are and where you are going and where you’ve come from. I will always root for Elias and Laia, I have come around to understanding Helene and wish for her to find some peace as well. There’s no shortage of things to look forward to in the next installment, and I can’t wait!
Loved this!
this series is absolutely AMAZING!
I burned through An Ember in the Ashes series, with A Reaper at the Gates being the third book. Brilliantly choreographed, each character moves independently, but their actions are completely intertwined. If you want to loose sleep at night, I highly recommend this series.
I think I just died. Am I dead? This book killed me!!! This book is amazing from beginning to end! I cannot even begin to tell you how perfect this book is. I wasn’t sure what to expect and I wasn’t prepared for what this book did to me, but I am SO glad this isn’t the end!
Love this whole series….it is a fantastic read!!!
Definitely felt like a third book in a series. The plot moves along in many ways, but you never feel like anything quite happens exactly until the end. There’s a major plot twist near the end which is interesting. I listened to it on audio and it was enjoyable, although a bit slow at times. Looking forward to the end of an intense series with Book 4!
Absolutely loved this third installment in the Ember series! Sabaa’s words had me glued from page one!!! I can’t wait to see what book 4 will bring!
OMG! I loved this book. It was exciting and beyond frustrating. A Reaper at the Gates can be described as the The Turning Point in this series. I couldn’t believe how much Elias, Helene, and Laia both struggled and found the role they would play in the future of their people. Their purposes are all different as Elias struggles with accepting his role as The Soul Reaper, Helene always seems to be one step behind the Commandant, and Laia must embrace her new role while letting go of her past.
There are some shocking things that go down. The action was thrilling as usual and Helene is a beast with her war hammer. I love being a vulnerable side of her and getting a look into the close relationship and the love she has for her sister. And can I say how much I love her and Harper. Eeekkkk!!! Needless to say Helene stole the show in this book. I wanted to bash Elias upside the head, but his story arc in this book is probably harder than anyone’s. But I very happy with him by the end of the book. Laia was my least favorite character.
All in all. I loved this book. I’m so addicted to the amazing writing and this series just keeps getting better and better. Sabaa Tahir is a master. Now I’m going to go cry in a corner as the thought of having to wait to see what happens next because some serious shit is about to go down.
