Children’s books come in all varieties, shapes, and sizes. Sharon C. Williams offers a new series about Jasper the Amazon Parrot who has adventures in the rain forest. This is my first book by the author and won’t be the last… I’ve already read the first two in the series but will focus on the debut in this review.
Considered chapter books, this one has nine chapters and was published in 2019 with great success. The story begins when two baby parrots hatch from eggs in their mother’s nest. They face a bunch of danger in the Amazon, especially when they get curious and try to fly too early on their own while their mother is away securing dinner.
The cover is gorgeous, and I’m certain it would catch any kid’s eye in the store. The language is on target for the age range, and this brought back memories of my classes on Reading and Children’s Literature when I was in college several years ago. I could easily see reading one chapter a night with a young kid, then taking it a step further by researching pictures on the internet, applying the lessons to real-life dangers, and talking about the underlying themes behind the words and scenes.
Williams has created a wonderful cast of friends, including a monkey and a sloth. There are humorous and serious moments, and readers will quickly latch on to the curious but lovable personalities of the two main parrot babies. Even Momma bird has the perfect amount of spunk and maternal instincts.
A definite recommend for youngsters and teachers… keep an eye on this series and author. I see good things happening here!
A gentle little tale of Jasper, a fledgling, yellow cheeked Amazon parrot who, accompanied by his little brother, Willie, learns about his home in the Amazon Rainforest. The brothers get into some scrapes together as they learn about the dangers they can encounter as youngsters alone on the forest floor and the friends they can make.
A simple tale with a strong sense of right and wrong. Young readers will learn the importance of listening to their mother and to older, more experienced friends, even if those friends come from a totally different background. I recommend this book.
Jasper, Amazon Parrot: A Rainforest Adventure is a cute story about Jasper and his brother Willie. They are Parrots living in the Amazon. I read this one to my kids. It took them a little bit to get into the story. It starts with Jasper just hatching and then his brother hatching and my kids were not hooked on the story until after Jasper and Willie try to leave the nest. These two have a great brother relationship. Along the way, they meet new friends, Charlie and George. We definitely will be reading more of Jasper to see what adventures he gets into next.
4 1/2 Stars!
This book was received from the Author/Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was such a cute read and perfect for young readers who are just getting into chapter books.
In this story, Jasper and his brother Willie run into some obstacles and they grow up but they also learn that they are not grown-ups yet they still have a lot to learn. Which is great since there are multiple books in this series. There are a lot of lessons in this book even though it was so short. Kids see they should always tell someone where they are going, listen to your elders, making friends with people that are different from you is a good thing, and more. The more I think about this story the more lessons I realize I read.
If you are a parent or a teacher and you are looking for new books to add to your library this one is perfect. I just wish I would have had this when my daughter was younger.
