Cornell Reed is the bastard son of an earl. After joining the navy & becoming a captain, he’s now content with a simple life & has opened a cordwainers shop. Pleasant Hill has always yearned for something more, rather than toiling her days away as a washerwoman. She sees a sign in a shop window & is thrilled to be accepted as an apprentice to Cornell.
A delightful read that I read in a sitting. Cornell doesn’t trust anyone so how he gradually let people in was heart warming. Pea was lovely, hardworking & caring, so desperate to give her family a Christmas to remember.
Pleasant & Cornell’s Story was Absolutely Delightful, Heartfelt & Romantic.
Cornell a Cordwainer & a By Blow of an Earl.
Pleasant a Daughter of a Cobbler. They come together by his need of an assistant in his shop. I am so Happy I got a chance to read a story about Common fols from the past instead of Royalty.
A young woman who has the responsibility for taking care of her stepmother and three siblings, takes a job as an apprentice to a cordwainer. A sprig of mistletoe and later a mistletoe bough will change their connection to each other. A very romantic holiday romance.

He is the bastard son of an earl…
Cornell Reed was raised as a commoner by his mother, a maid who had been dismissed from service after it was discovered she was carrying an illegitimate child. Because of his modest upbringing, Cornell had never cared to be recognized by his father, Lord Haverton. He is content with his simple life as a cordwainer in London, a skill he’d learned during his years as a sea-faring naval captain. It isn’t until he advertises for an apprentice for the busy Christmas season, does Cornell realize what he’s been missing.

My review
Are there Christmas miracle when all seems so grim…
This is my introduction read to Mrs Tabetha Waite, and I just loved Cornell and Pleasant’s tale.
It was a lovely story mixing the harsh life commoners were enduring like in a Dickens novel and a fairytale with a Godmother in the form of an Earl.
Pleasant is living the hard life of those left with nothing except hope, as it is priceless. And even this has a cost when you dreams too high.
Cornell owes to no one his success, he is a self-made-man, and he has every right to be proud of what he accomplished. Still, he lives a lonely life.
Until Pleasant disrupts everything.
In close contact, he has a glimpse of what a family can be, she rouses sentiments he never felt.
So will he reconcile with his past to be freed from the wounds it left, with the hope of a brighter future?
Mrs Waite has shared with us a lively tale with details of the daily’s life, the struggle of the paupers and a dash of Christmas magic.

Starring Pleasant Hill (what a wonderful name) and Cornell Reed.
I love that our hero and heroine are from the working class… and amidst the attraction, they had mutual respect for each other’s craft. Pleasant was such a hardworking woman. I truly wanted to give her a hug. She really deserved all the happiness coming her way. This story pulled at the heartstrings and Tabetha Waite did a fantastic job channeling Charles Dickens. A beautiful story about love, family, and Christmas miracles. Very well done!!
Tabetha Waite is one of my “Keeper Shelf” Authors. I love her stories.
I bought this story as part of The Yuletide Happily Ever After II anthology.
My star system:
4 stars: Book was great… loved the characters… will definitely be re-reading this story… but didn’t make me cry.
