International bestseller and master storyteller Jeffrey Archer is at the very top of his game in a story of fate and fortune, redemption and revenge. If Danny Cartwright had proposed to Beth Wilson the day before, or the day after, he would not have been arrested and charged with the murder of his best friend. But when the four prosecution witnesses are a barrister, a popular actor, an … aristocrat, and the youngest partner in an established firm’s history, who is going to believe your side of the story?
Danny is sentenced to twenty-two years and sent to Belmarsh prison, the highest-security jail in the land, from where no inmate has ever escaped.
However, Spencer Craig, Lawrence Davenport, Gerald Payne, and Toby Mortimer all underestimate Danny’s determination to seek revenge, and Beth’s relentless quest to pursue justice, which ends up with all four fighting for their lives,
Thus begins Jeffrey Archer’s most powerful novel since “Kane and Abel, ” with a cast of characters that will remain with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
And if that is not enough, prepare for an ending that will shock even the most ardent of Archer’s fans.

i thought this was a well written book. a very good read. glad danny had so many good friends. I dispared that he would ever find justice.
Started out really slow, but picked up the pace to produce a good book.
I can’t enjoy a book that has such a farfetched storyline. Totally unrealistic.
Archer is the best in developing plot and character.
It was a good read I would read more from him
A conflation of the author’s Kane & Able and the Count of Monte Cristo, which is exceptionally well told. Danny escapes from prison impersonating his murdered cell mate, a Lord, and uses his wealth and status to destroy the four false witnesses who put him in prison and thwart the uncle of his cell mate plan to take over the estate and title. When …
I started this book thinking I would be deleting it after a couple of pages but now I am half way thru it.
Jeffrey Archer is one of my favorite authors..his writing never disappoints !!
I’ve read most of Jeffrey Archer’s books and this one doesn’t disappoint. While some other reviewers have said the book was too long, predictable & rather boring, I found it very enjoyable and I hated to have it end.
Jeffrey Archer at his best.
I love Jeffrey Archer’s books and once again I was not disappointed. I hate to use a cliche: but I couldn’t put it down! I’d classify it as a legal thriller.
Really enjoyed the book.
Not as well-written as the typical Jeffrey Archer books.
Great book . I really enjoyed it.
Couldn’t put it down. Stayed up late at night reading it.
Great book from beginning to end unpredictable and realistic entertaining. A fantastic read.
The book was long but I did get like the characters. The premise was somewhat unrealistic but if you can suspend disbelief, it is a quick beach read.
The Archer twist and turns never fail to surprise and entertain the reader.
One of the best novels I’ve read recently. Mr. Archer does an exceptional job telling a story & doesn’t resort to repition to extend his story. Leaves you guessing until the final page.
Jeffrey Archer is a world class story teller. His life experiences have given him first hand knowledge of “upper” class foibles, working class morals and honour among thieves. He tells his story with pace and yet has time to build his characters through dialogue. He remains a favorite!
Love all his books
