If you call the light, you will inevitably battle the darkness.Brady is a high school senior, the champion of the outcast and bullied, who becomes the unwitting recipient of a gift that is both beautiful and terrifying. He discovers he can talk to angels and draw down a magnificent and mysterious light from the Blessed Virgin. However, Brady soon realizes that such power comes at a price: If you … price: If you call the light, you will inevitably battle the darkness.
Indeed, a malevolent darkness is racing toward a small town outside of Dayton, Ohio – transported in a rusted, white conversion van. Its driver brings a palpable evil, unique in its seemingly aimless cruelty. Arrogant and vicious, Ray has no idea of the role he plays in his Master’s plan. This evil has the purpose of snuffing out a holy foe before it grows stronger.
1970s Beavercreek, Ohio is a small, Air Force base town. With lots of folks continually moving in and out, the community is slow to take notice when teenage girls start disappearing.
However, as darkness descends and violence intensifies around him, Brady realizes that he is in a life-and-death struggle – not against school bullies, nor merely flesh and blood – but against a strange man with a leering smile who carries Satan in his soul.
In an epic battle of good versus evil, Brady will fulfill a prophecy that is hidden in the vaults of the Vatican…but only if he follows the laws of the Prayer of Vengeance.
Praise for A Prayer of Vengeance:
“This series gets my highest honors! These books pull back the curtain, exposing the war between the light and the darkness playing out all around us right now, and what is possible if one believes.”

WARNING TO READERS: This is not a regular, “sugar-coated” Christian fiction story. A Prayer of Vengeance contains foul language and explicit violence, just like in the real world. Readers of a Dan Brown- or Steven King-like author will love this book.
“Generally I am leery of so-called ‘Christian’ fiction. It almost always has a formula, lacks realism, and seldom deals with actual Holy Spirit power. John Stafford has given us a much different Christian novel, although without question one colored by Catholicism. His characters are realistic and yes, frequently they swear; his villains are indeed disgustingly bad; but the power that Stafford depicts is indeed holy. A non-Catholic, in-fact, may have less trouble with the “sci-fi” elements of Holy Spirit power, which might seem to a non-believer as no different than the spirit realm abilities of, say, Dr. Strange. Stafford weaves a solid story of good vs. evil, of heroes and dark forces, and of flawed individuals who need a supernatural God to fight their spiritual foes. A Prayer for Vengeance is the first of a trilogy, and I’m ready for more demon-huntin’ in the sequels.”

It wasn’t labelled as such, but I knew it was a warning: “To gaze into the heart of Darkness is to feel its horror even when we stand at a distance.”
I took the warning to mean I was going to feel something bad even while sitting in my easy chair reading the book, a far distance from what was happening on the book’s pages. The warning didn’t deter me. I’d read other such books and seen horror movies. However, this book was different. By the end of the first chapter, I had not only felt my skin crawl from the horror, I wanted revenge.
The author speaks of Darkness and Light so authoritatively that, at times, the line between what’s real and what’s not is blurred.
The book is set in 1976 Beavercreek, Ohio, and the main characters are high-school students. All characters came alive as I read. Some events and the descriptions of the town were so realistic, I searched the internet and found everything appeared to be historically correct.
When I first heard of this book, I thought it would be another fictional novel pitting good vs. evil. Oh my, was I ever wrong with that assumption. From the first few pages of the book, I knew something was different and I became captivated as I read page after page and was pulled into this epic work by John Stafford.
As someone who has had a near death experience two times, I can personally attest to the battle between the light and the dark on this Earth. All around us, there is an invisible war raging and we are all a part of it in one way or another.
Mr. Stafford’s ability to peer into this battle and create a novel depicting the vilest hate on one side and the most beautiful love on the other side is truly amazing. The narratives, story telling, twists and turns of the plot, and character building in this novel are truly telling of an author who could be side-by-side on any best sellers list. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s really that good.
As for a comparison to other novels I’ve read, this book feels similar in some ways to The Da Vinci Code, only better in several ways. It is difficult for me to express in words just how riveting this book really is.
“Who is as God?”
This book is enthralling. My husband and I both read it. My husband is typically to busy with work to read, he could not put this book down. Brady the protagonist is a young man in high school who finds himself in a vary high pressure confusing (initially) situation. He has to work through some very tough choices. Overall he chooses to do what is right and fulfill his calling, to fight the darkness. This book takes the reader through some heinous acts as well as some redeeming ones. It is a griping read.
A Prayer of Vengeance by John Stafford is a page turning nail bitter! I have never read a plot line quite like this. John Stafford is a word smith who is able to paint a picture for the reader like no other. This book is the first is a series of books depicting the evil that is in this world. Brady, the hero, is a relatable lovable character. I found myself routing for him to succeed in his mission. Well done Mr. Stafford!
