I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

This is one of my favorite novels of all time, and I believe it to be Irving’s best. All of the elements from the beginning of the book converge in such a wonderful conclusion that is powerful, poignant and poetic. Simply a wonderful read.

Love everything Irving writes. This is on my top ten favorite list. What a story!
This is my favorite John Irving book, and despite it’s great length, I was enthralled the entire way. When I was finished reading, grieved for the next week because I missed the characters so much and kept longing to know what happened next.
Beautiful story.
One of the best books I’ve ever read
This book has been listed in the top five best books on PBS’s What America Reads. It’s one that I voted for and I just might read it again! Best book I ever read.
One of the best books I ever read!
On my top 10 list.
One of my favorites of all time!
This was a wonderful book. You have to be able to complete it to really understand it but it seems typical of boys growing up at that time. It took me quite awhile to read it to the end and I had to stop several times to digest different parts of it, but I loved it.
What a wonderful, imaginative novel! One of my top ten.
This is not without reason a classic! The story line is utterly original, twisted, ugly and beautiful all at once and thoroughly unpredictable. I simply adore John Irvings voice and his courage to go for it. This is one of those books one will read over and over and each time there are new layers to discover.
One of my favorite books of all time.
