I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

One of those rare books that stays with you.
This one will cause tears, without a doubt. But is a wonderfully timeless tale of friendship, purpose and faith.
One of my favourite books of all time
One of my top 10 books
One of my favorite books of the thousands I have read in my lifetime
One of my all time favorite books!
A bit like Forrest Gump, very good read.
This is my favorite book of all time. Such a great story. I’ve probably read it 20 times and it never gets old.
The book was interesting but I didn’t like the constant teenage boy sexual stuff in it.
This is my favorite John Irving book! Haunting! It has been years since I read this book, but it still is one I intend to reread.
I loved the characters and story. Very different, you laughed, cried and everything in between. A great story of friendship
One of my favorite stories. John Irving did great with this one.
Been a while since I’ve read it. I still think about it. I need to reread to remember details. I do remember I’m in for a treat when I do.
I’ve enjoyed all of John Irving’s books, but for me, this one is way at the top of my favorites list. The characters are masterfully developed, and the story line is engaging from beginning to end. Truly a classic in my mind, and the kind of book that is well suited to all different types of reading audiences.
This book took we a while to read. Definitely a MIND story rather than an action tale. Hard to believe anyone could have the influence Owen did.
Very long. Hopeful while realistic too.
One of my very favorite books.
What can I say about John Irving. I love his writing and even though I disagree with some aspects of how he views the world, I accept the validity of his opinions and I marvel at his ability to inspire empathy and acceptance with his beautiful gift of language. I’ve read everything he has written. Sometimes it is an exhausting slog pushing …
It made me laugh until I cried – a wonderful book!
I loved this story,
I tried to read other John Irving books after this one, but none of them satisfied like this one. Do yourself a favour and sit down with it when you have a long weekend.
