I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

This one has stayed with me for years! I regularly recommend it. Every detail matters in this novel and everything is tied together by the last page. I love the writing – I’m a big John Irving fan – but some of his books are a little tougher to get into . This one – well all I can say is… please read it!
One of my all time favorites.
Possibly John Irving’s best work. A beautifully written book with characters that stay with you.
John Irving tell stories that are heart-breaking and laugh-out-loud funny all in the same scene! I love his quirky characters and winding plots.
John Irving is one of my all-time favorite authors.
I have read this book a couple of times and been in book club discussion groups where we argued over the book (that is always a great book club find…one which stirs controversy and discussion).
I really did not like this book. I started it because it was a book chosen by my book club otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered to finish it.
Laugh-out-loud story, especially the Christmas play. I would read it again. The movie did not do it justice.
Funniest, most tender ever
This is one of my favorite books. The writing is beautiful, and the story unforgettable.
Read this a while ago. Amazing characters with fascinating relationships. Had very stimulating conversations about this book. Touched upon all the emotions. Fascinating story.
A marvelous book. An all time favorite.
This is one of my all-time favorite books. The character of Owen Meany is probably the best I’ve ever come across. It is hard to even describe what this book is about, but it is worth every minute, every page.
This is one of my favorite books. The characters are interesting, quirky and original. The plot and the ending will stay with you.
Awesome classic. Must read
Top 10.
This is one of my all time favorite books
I thought this book was very good. But, not until I had read the first 100 pages. It comes in spurts with drama and is a wonderful story about friendship. After I got into the book, I didn’t want to put it down. One of my better reads.
One of my favorite books of all time!
One of my favorite books of all time. Have read it several times.
