I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

I have read this book numerous times, and always love it.
My favorite book ever!
Third time in about 15 years I’ve read this book. For me, it’s almost like visiting old friends. John Irving brought these character to life! Highly recommend.
I love the characters Frequently bizarre, but always people I want to know.
My least favorite of Irving’s novels.
It has been years since I read this book and much of the story is still present in my memory. An excellent book for character building.
This is without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve ever read. John Irving is a masterful writer who mixes heart break with humor, and changes the world.
Everyone should read this book to understand how the nation’s young men suffered through the draft during Viet Nam. The friendship of the boys in this tale is undeniably poignant and unforgettable. Owen is one of the loveliest characters you will ever meet in a book – an outsider who refuses to remain outside. You will laugh until you cry.
If we all had Faith like Owen Meany, there is nothing we couldn’t accomplish,!!!
I read this in my Book Club. A unique character!
In the almost 30 years since reading this book I still think of Owen Meany and often quote him..”there is no such thing as coincidence”. John Irving’s Owen Meany is a fully realized character, deeply spiritual and profoundly moving.
This is my favorite book! John Irving absolutely nails the grieving process.
