I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

Funny but very Sad
In the top 10 of my favorite all time books. And I taught English for 20 years!
One of my favorite books
This is a book I revisit and reread every few years…
I read “The World According to Garp” a long time ago, and this is the first book that has made me feel this way since then. The characters are fascinating, none more than Owen. He’s as unique as Garp. Their mothers are similar; they don’t worry about how the world views them. I don’t want to give any of the plot away. Read it.
What a wonderful story of friendship. This is one of those books that move at a leisurely pace and entwines itself in your heart. I could not stop thinking about this book for days after finishing it. I thought I knew how it would end and was not disappointed, just heartbroken.
Interesting characterizations once you waded through the interminably wordiness of every description of every event and person. I suppose it meshed out the story and the people but probably could have been cut back a bit. Once you finally got to the end you were riveted.
One of Irving s best
I can count on one hand the number of times I stopped reading a book before I finished it, but I could only get to 22%. That was forcing it. Way too drawn out and detailed. I found myself skimming then finally gave up.
Simply, a great story
I enjoyed this book, even though sometimes I thought it go a little wordy, could have condensed some. However, the story was interesting and the idea of a predestined life was different.
My favorite book of all time
The strange humor and arresting characters kept me engrossed. Irving took strange very small boy and thru the eyes of his best friend followed him to his appointment with fate. Very unique.
One of my favorite books of all time.
Not a fan of this book. Allegory blah, blah.
One of the worst books I’ve ever read. Could be a good story if properly written.
Thought provoking as well as humorous. You will fall in love with Owen. A really delightful cast of characters. Each unique and hilarious. I especially like that Owen’s dialogue is written in all caps which is later explained in the book.
Probably his least offensive story. But that’s not saying much.
One of the best novel I ever read
I LOVED A Prayer for Owen Meany! This must have been the book the movie Simon Birch was based on. Owen is such a genuine, original character. The story pulled at my heartstrings again and again. Read it and share it those that you love.
